TV Special
Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is the thirteenth-generation descendant of the legendary outlaw Ishikawa Goemon. He carries on this lineage as a modern master swordsman and a stoic, honorable thief who often works alongside Arsène Lupin III. In the television special, he joins Lupin’s team in their global pursuit of a massive treasure once gathered by a figure named Harimao. The mission revolves around locating three specific statues that serve as keys to unlock the fortune, and Goemon is a full participant in the international manhunt that follows.
He is defined by his unwavering and serious personality. Goemon maintains a strict, traditionalist code of conduct, adhering to Japanese customs in all aspects of his life, from his preferred cuisine to his traditional dress and his practice of meditation during quiet moments. This reserved demeanor is paired with immense pride in his abilities, and he feels deep shame and remorse whenever he fails to accomplish a task or when his skills are inadequate. Despite his calm exterior, he is known to have weaknesses, including a susceptibility to charming women and occasional frustration with modern technology.
Goemon’s role in the group is that of a powerful and reliable ally, though he operates with a degree of professional independence. He is motivated less by the treasure itself and more by a personal sense of honor and the opportunity to test and apply his skills. Throughout the hunt for Harimao's treasure, he applies his abilities directly and efficiently, confronting challenges head-on. For instance, during a chase, he dispatches pursuing police vehicles by using his sword to slice the ice beneath them, a precise and non-lethal resolution to a problem. His interactions with Lupin are marked by mutual respect but also by his frequent annoyance at Lupin’s playful and womanizing antics. He has a notably more amicable relationship with their partner, Daisuke Jigen, viewing him as a fellow warrior and reliable comrade, while he typically distrusts Fujiko Mine for her manipulative nature, though he will work alongside her when necessary. His interactions with Inspector Koichi Zenigata are less personal, though he has shown moments of concern for the inspector’s well-being.
There is little to no significant character development specific to this special, as Goemon’s established traits remain consistent. He is portrayed as a fully formed master of his craft, from his deep meditative focus during downtime to his professional negotiation for better pay, such as when he requests paid vacation after a difficult job. His most notable ability is his mastery of the sword Zantetsuken, a blade so sharp it can slice through virtually any substance, including steel, bullets, and even buildings. He is also highly skilled in several unarmed martial arts, such as Karate and Aikido. Preferring to avoid killing, he often uses his blade to disarm or disrobe opponents, which prompts him to utter his signature catchphrase: I have cut yet another worthless object.
