Description
Jūzō Okita is a distinguished officer in the United Nations Cosmo Navy who commands the space battleship Yamato on its critical mission to save a dying Earth. Born on December 8, 2141, in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, Okita possesses a strong academic background, having earned a PhD in astrophysics from the National Space Defense Academy before rising through the military ranks. His early career includes service during the Second Inner Planetary War and command of the Japanese Fleet, where he forged lasting bonds with peers such as Ryu Hijikata and Hikozaemon Tokugawa.

Okita is characterized by a stern and utterly devoted demeanor, placing the survival of Earth above all else, including his own life. This dedication is tested by a secret, terminal illness known as Planet Bomb Syndrome, contracted from the radiation of Garmillas attacks, which progressively weakens him throughout the voyage. Despite his physical decline, he remains mentally sharp and resolute, famously defying orders during humanity's first encounter with the Garmillas in 2191 by refusing to fire on the alien vessels, an act of conscience that cost him his command but established his guiding principle of thoughtful leadership. His command style blends unyielding discipline with a paternal empathy, particularly towards his young crew members, and he is known for his aggressive, head-on tactical approach that often uses terrain to upset enemy expectations.

Okita's primary motivation is to save Earth from the environmental devastation wrought by the Garmillas, which has left the planet's surface uninhabitable. He pursues this goal by leading the Yamato on a desperate voyage to the distant planet Iscandar to retrieve the Cosmo Reverse System, a device capable of restoring Earth. This mission carries profound personal weight, as he carries the grief of losing his own son in battle, a tragedy that drives his deep, paternal regard for the young officer Susumu Kodai, whom he sees as a surrogate for his lost child and for Kodai's late brother, Mamoru, whom Okita also mentored.

Throughout the story, Okita serves as the unwavering captain of the Yamato, guiding the ship through numerous hostile encounters with the Garmillas Empire. Even when his illness leaves him bedridden, he continues to be a vital source of strategic advice to the crew, especially to Kodai, whom he nurtures to think independently. His character development is marked by a poignant arc of sacrifice and legacy; he leads the Yamato all the way to the Garmillas homeworld and back to Earth, but dies just as the ship reaches its home planet, having achieved his mission. In a metaphysical turn, his consciousness merges with the Cosmo Reverse System to direct the restoration of Earth.

Okita's notable abilities extend beyond his tactical genius to include remarkable diplomatic skill. While a fierce combatant, he demonstrates flexibility by forging strategic alliances with Garmillas dissidents when necessary, and he prioritizes saving civilian lives over destruction, as shown when he used the Yamato's Wave Motion Gun to protect the Garmillas capital from its own leader's genocidal plan. He is also a capable physicist, a discipline that complements his command of advanced spacefaring technology. In later continuations of the story, such as the film Final Yamato, Okita is revived after a period of cryogenic suspension to once again lead Earth's forces against new threats, though this narrative branch differs from the original 2199 timeline.
