Marvin Miller
Description
Marvin Miller was an American actor and voice performer whose extensive career in radio, film, and animation included contributions to the English-language dub of classic Japanese anime. He is known for providing the voice of Captain Juzo Okita in the English version of the 1977 film Space Cruiser Yamato, a compilation movie of the original Space Battleship Yamato series. In this production, he also served as the narrator.
Born Marvin Elliott Mueller on July 18,. Louis, Missouri, Miller began his performance career in radio while attending Washington University. After being turned down for a job at a local station, he returned to audition as a character actor, performing a self-written sketch in multiple voices. This approach earned him a position as a summer replacement. Following graduation, he moved to Chicago, where he became a prolific radio personality, appearing on an average of forty-five broadcasts a week and earning the nickname Chicago's one-man radio industry from Variety magazine.
Miller relocated to Hollywood in 1944 and quickly transitioned into film and television work. Throughout his career, he was highly sought after for his deep baritone voice and dialect skills. One of his most famous roles was providing the voice of Robby the Robot in the 1956 science fiction film Forbidden Planet, a character he reprised for The Invisible Boy and whose audio was used for cameo appearances in later films. His television work included the long-running role of narrator Michael Anthony on the series The Millionaire, as well as voicing the title character in the animated series Aquaman during The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure.
He was a frequent contributor to animated productions, particularly for DePatie-Freleng Enterprises. He voiced the French Commissioner in the cartoon series The Inspector, which aired as part of The Pink Panther Show, alternating the role with voice actor Paul Frees. His other voice credits from this era include work on shows such as Fantastic Voyage, Jonny Quest, and various Pink Panther cartoon shorts. In addition to his acting, Miller narrated several documentary and industrial films, including My Country Tis of Thee, which was nominated for an Academy Award.
Miller also achieved notable success in audio recording. He won Grammy Awards in 1965 and 1966 for his recordings of stories by Dr. Seuss. He also created the first known audio recording of the entire Holy Bible on vinyl records, a production that contained over a million words and took a week and a half to play. His work in anime appears to have been limited to the English dub production of Space Battleship Yamato, a landmark series in the history of Japanese animation, where his performance as the stoic Captain Okita remains his most significant contribution to the genre.
