Description
Desler is the charismatic and complex leader of the Garmillas Empire, a powerful interstellar civilization. He is a figure of immense authority, recognizable by his blue skin, golden hair, and sharp features, often seen wearing a grey military uniform with a red cape and white gloves. While he projects an image of charm, flamboyance, and culture, he is also an arrogant and ruthless dictator with a low tolerance for failure among his subordinates. He is a brilliant military tactician who takes a personal interest in outmaneuvering his enemies, preferring elaborate traps and psychological warfare over simple brute force, as demonstrated in his sustained campaign against the spaceship Yamato.

Desler's motivations are rooted in the tragic fate of his homeworld, Garmillas, which is facing imminent destruction. His aggressive expansion across the galaxy, including the radioactive bombardment of Earth, is driven not by simple conquest but by the desperate need to find a new inhabitable planet for his species. This primary goal is intertwined with two personal promises that define his life. The first was made to his late brother, Mathius Desler, to save their people from extinction. The second was a pledge to Queen Starsha of the neighboring planet Iscandar, towards whom he harbors a deep and lasting affection, to spread peace and salvation across the universe, a goal he ironically pursued through violent conquest.

In his role as the Eternal Leader, Desler serves as the primary antagonist to the crew of the Yamato. He is a constant and resourceful threat, personally overseeing many of the strategies designed to destroy the ship, viewing it as a worthy and tenacious foe. His key relationships are complex and evolve significantly. His archenemy is the Yamato's crew, particularly Susumu Kodai, but this conflict transforms over time. His loyalty to his subordinate, the loyal General Talan, stands in contrast to his willingness to execute other officers for failure. His affection for Queen Starsha remains a consistent, though one-sided, emotional touchstone, and his promise to her continues to influence his actions even after his fall from power.

Desler undergoes a significant character transformation throughout the series. Initially a proud and seemingly invincible dictator, his obsession with destroying the Yamato leads to a humiliating defeat and the apparent destruction of his flagship. After being resurrected by the White Comet Empire, his negative traits are amplified by rage, but he experiences a pivotal change of heart after witnessing the selfless love between Yuki Mori and Susumu Kodai. This act of compassion leads him to renounce his vendetta against Earth and provide crucial aid to his former enemies. Following this redemption, he becomes a humbler and more reflective figure, deeply regretting his past sins and ultimately serving as a reluctant ally to Earth, dedicating himself to finding a new home for his displaced people rather than seeking power for himself.

Among his notable abilities, Desler is a master strategist and a capable combatant. He pilots his own personal battlecruiser and possesses a formidable superweapon known as the Dessler Gun, a powerful shock cannon capable of immense destruction.
