Description
Cheko-chan is the central figure of the anime Pugyuru, presented as a small, enigmatic maid who arrives to assist a young, unnamed girl often referred to as Ma. Her origins are deliberately unclear, as she comes from either the Maid Country or the Maid Planet, and she describes herself not as a born being but as something that sprouted, claiming to be the end of human evolution. Despite her role as a maid, she is far from ordinary, having been described as a battery-operated organism whose composition and abilities defy logical explanation.

Physically, Cheko-chan is very short and has blue hair in a short cut, with green eyes. Her hairstyle includes a distinct cowlick on top of her head, which she can use like a fishing rod, and she wears a frilly headdress typical of a maid. This headdress, as well as her hair, possesses transformative properties and can become a variety of items, including a boomerang, cutlery, and tissue paper. However, it is also dangerous; if anyone else wears the headdress, it may self-destruct or suck blood from the person.

Her body is perhaps her most notable feature, as it is described as structurally symmetrical in all directions, allowing her head to be easily removed without any issue. The body itself can also change form, turning into glue or other materials, and normal-sized humans can even enter her body through her mouth. Internally, she is just as strange, producing cooked rice from her head and having a skeleton that changes shape randomly when measured.

In terms of personality and motivations, Cheko-chan carries out her duties as a maid regardless of the bizarre situations that unfold. She is the primary catalyst for the show's chaotic and random events, often interacting with a group of equally unusual friends who appear throughout the series. Despite her strange nature, she expresses a distinct, if absurd, ambition for her future, which is to become a sumo wrestler.

Her role in the story is not to drive a plot forward, as the series is deliberately plotless and focused on short, random comedic skits. Instead, she serves as the constant, unpredictable element around which the humor revolves. The story is structured to explore the nature of what Cheko-chan actually is, with the other characters often reacting to her bizarre abilities. For instance, she is friends with Mizore, a snow spirit who is edible, and Nachiko, a large squid, and she is not above snacking on them on occasion. She also attracts the attention of others, including a pair of yakuza members who adore her and Kanato, a delinquent schoolgirl.

Key relationships are formed primarily through her interactions with these characters. She takes on a yeti named Chiko as her disciple, and he calls her Master. Her presence even affects a local yakuza boss and his daughter, Reo, who initially wanted to kill Cheko-chan out of jealousy but eventually gets along with her. Due to the episodic nature of the show, which is only about 40 minutes long in total, there is little room for character development. Cheko-chan remains a static but endlessly entertaining enigma, her mysteries and abilities simply serving as a recurring source of comedy rather than a narrative arc to be resolved.
