Description
Hazuki Fujiwara, also known by her apprentice witch name Melody, is one of the central characters in the story, introduced as a childhood friend of the main protagonist. She is an eight-year-old second-grader who comes from a wealthy and well-regarded family, which has afforded her a life of material comfort but also one defined by high expectations and a strict, etiquette-focused upbringing.

In terms of personality, Hazuki is the gentle and quiet counterpart to her more boisterous best friend. She is studious, intelligent, and consistently ranks as one of the top students in her class. Her nature is fundamentally kind, polite, and well-mannered, reflecting her sheltered and ladylike upbringing. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a deep-seated shyness and a notable lack of confidence. Her primary internal conflict stems from her inability to assert her own desires, as she has a powerful aversion to disappointing others, particularly her parents. She often suppresses her own feelings and agrees to her mother’s plans for her, such as taking ballet and Japanese dance lessons, simply to avoid causing sadness or conflict. This self-sacrificing tendency, where she prioritizes the happiness of others over her own, is a defining flaw that she seeks to overcome. Despite her timidity, Hazuki possesses an inner resolve and can become surprisingly stubborn and assertive when she witnesses an injustice. She is also known for her extreme fear of ghosts and other paranormal phenomena, a trait that often throws her into a state of panic. She has a unique sense of humor and is one of the few people who finds the notoriously unfunny jokes of the "SOS Trio" to be hilarious.

Her motivations are deeply tied to personal growth and the navigation of complex family dynamics. A core reason for her becoming an apprentice witch was a desire to find the courage to clearly express her own opinions to her mother, whom she loves but feels pressured by. She struggles with the expectations placed upon her as a daughter from a prestigious family while trying to maintain her cherished friendships and pursue her own interests, particularly playing the violin.

Her role in the group is as a foundational member of the witch apprentices. She, along with Aiko Senoo, discovered the secret of Majo Rika and chose to become an apprentice witch to help protect the secret. Among the initial trio, she is often considered the most skilled and precise spellcaster in theory, although her initial transformations were famously hampered when her glasses would catch on her new clothes. She is the "Orange Witch" apprentice, a theme color reflected in her magical items and personal wardrobe. Later in the series, she takes on a nurturing role during the arc where the group raises a magical baby named Hana, showcasing her motherly and responsible side.

Key relationships are central to Hazuki’s character development. Her most important bond is with Doremi Harukaze, her best friend since kindergarten. Doremi is often the only person with whom Hazuki can be completely open about her feelings, and their friendship provides mutual support, with Doremi encouraging Hazuki to be more confident. Hazuki also shares a supportive and balanced dynamic with her fellow apprentice Aiko Senoo. She shares a harmonious relationship with Onpu Segawa, and her friendship with Momoko Asuka initially has a rocky start but eventually evolves into a bond of mutual comfort. Her relationship with her mother, Reiko, is a primary source of drama, as her arc largely focuses on learning to honestly communicate her own aspirations, such as her desire to attend a specific high school to pursue the violin, rather than passively accepting her mother’s plans. She also shares a close, almost grandmotherly bond with her family's long-time maid, Baaya. In terms of romantic interests, Hazuki harbors longstanding, mutual feelings for her childhood friend, Masaru Yada, a relationship that is consistently hinted at throughout the series and officially develops later on. She is also the object of affection for another character, Fujio, though she does not reciprocate these feelings.

Throughout the story, Hazuki undergoes significant development, gradually learning to be more confident and assertive. She moves from a state of passive acceptance to actively making decisions about her future, culminating in her choice to take the entrance exam for the prestigious Karen Girls' High School to pursue her dream of becoming a professional violinist, a decision she is finally able to communicate honestly to her mother. Her journey shows her becoming less reserved and more capable of expressing her true feelings, even when they might lead to difficult conversations.

Her notable abilities include her high intelligence and academic excellence, as well as her talent for playing the violin and composing music, skills she has practiced from a young age. As an apprentice witch, her magical skills are characterized by precision and a theoretical approach. Her standard spell is "Paipai Ponpoi Puwapuwa Puu," and she uses a magical tap device to perform her transformations. Her magic often has a delicate and precise quality, and she is shown to be adept at creative applications, such as giving life to objects.
