Description
Raganella is the witch who appears in the Ojamajo Doremi franchise and is also present in the original video animation Ojamajo Doremi Na-i-sho, a side story set during the same period as the third television season. The name Raganella is used in the Italian adaptation and refers to the frog form of the witch originally known as Majo Rika. Early in the story, the apprentice Doremi Harukaze accidentally discovers that the owner of a small magic shop is a real witch, and the laws of the witch world transform that witch into a frog. From that moment, she lives in this amphibian form and is known as Raganella.
Her background begins as a witch living in the human world, where she operates the MAHO shop, a store that sells magical talismans and lucky charms, with the assistance of her fairy companion, Lala. Because the transformation curse cannot be undone by the witch herself, the only way for Raganella to regain her original appearance is for the human apprentice who exposed her to pass the necessary witch examinations and become a fully fledged witch. This is the reason she makes Doremi her apprentice, and later she also grants the same magical transformation tools to Doremi's friends Hazuki and Aiko when they too learn her secret.
In terms of personality, Raganella is often portrayed as proud, sharp-tongued, and somewhat lazy, frequently scolding the apprentice witches for their clumsiness and complaining about the trouble they cause. In her frog form she retains her original temperament, so she remains a demanding and occasionally comical mentor rather than a gentle one. Despite her harsh outward manner, she takes her role as their teacher seriously and shows that she cares about the girls and about the magical baby Hana, even when she tries to hide it.
Her central motivation is to recover her original form, which depends on Doremi successfully completing the witch trials and becoming a full witch. Alongside this goal, she is responsible for running the MAHO shop and, after the events of the second season, for helping raise Hana together with the apprentice witches. In the Na-i-sho side story, the shop has been remodeled into a sweet house in the form of a bakery, and the characters live through the period when the girls are in the fifth grade and Hana is still a baby. During this time, Raganella continues to watch over the apprentices, and her interactions with them are used to expand their personalities and backgrounds.
Her most important relationship is with Doremi, whose accidental discovery caused her transformation and whose growth as a witch holds the key to undoing the curse. She also works closely with the other apprentice witches, Hazuki, Aiko, Onpu, Momoko, and Pop, and relies on the loyal support of her fairy Lala.
