Description
Hana-chan, whose full name in the human world is Makihatayama Hana, is a central character who appears in the Ojamajo Doremi series, including the specials Na-i-sho. She is no ordinary child but the future queen of the Witch World, having been born from a legendary blue rose in the Queen's garden after a century. Her birth was accidentally witnessed by a group of young witch apprentices including Doremi, who were then entrusted with the monumental task of raising her, becoming her adoptive mothers. She has fair skin, big rounded brown eyes, and thick lemon yellow hair. As a small child, she wears her hair in low pigtails tied with pink scrunchies. Her common outfit includes a white shirt with winged sleeves and denim shorts with heart-shaped pockets. As a baby, she often wore simple white or pink one-pieces. Her signature greeting is a cheerful "Chiisu".

Hana-chan's personality is that of a lively, childish, and affectionate little girl with a big heart. Her mentality matures slowly, leading her to often be clueless or air-headed, as many things in the human and witch worlds are new and confusing to her. Even with good intentions, her curiosity and lack of understanding can sometimes lead to trouble for herself and those around her. While she can be selfish and throw loud tantrums when unhappy, she is never truly spoiled by the attention she receives and is easily calmed by simple things. She is deeply loving and nonjudgmental, which allows her to form friendships easily. She adores her adoptive mothers and refers to them with great affection.

Throughout the story, Hana-chan's role evolves significantly. Initially, she is the helpless but magically powerful baby that Doremi and her friends must protect and care for. This responsibility is the primary focus of their duties as witch apprentices. She faces dangers, such as being a target for wizards who wish to exploit her immense power. As she grows, Hana-chan becomes more independent. Desperate to stay with the girls who raised her, she once uses her magic to rapidly age her body, allowing her to become an apprentice herself and attend school with them. Despite her older appearance, her mind does not fully mature at the same rate, leading to humorous and heartfelt situations where a teenager’s body houses a young child’s mind. Her development continues as she learns to control her incredible powers and take her first steps toward her destiny as the future ruler of the Witch World.

Her key relationships are almost entirely centered on her bonds with her surrogate family. Her deepest connection is with Doremi, whom she considers her primary mother. The two share very similar personalities, and Hana constantly turns to Doremi for comfort and support. Aiko initially fears being a poor mother but learns that her more boisterous style of love is just as valid. Onpu, despite her busy schedule, shares a special bond with Hana, who can often sense when the older girl is sad. Momoko, joining the group later, works hard to prove herself as a worthy mother figure and succeeds after Hana encourages her. Hazuki dotes on Hana by making things for her, and Pop, being closest in age, acts like a big sister to her. These relationships are reciprocal; Hana loves them unconditionally and often serves as a catalyst for their own personal growth.

As the future Witch Queen, Hana-chan possesses extraordinary magical abilities that surpass those of ordinary witches. Even as a newborn, her power was immense, and it was often said to be greater than all the other apprentices combined. In her early days, she could fly and perform magic unconsciously. Her magical crystal is white, and her fairy companion is named Toto. She has a unique spell, "Pororin Pyuarin Hanahana Pii," which she created herself, as her inherent power is so great that she technically does not need a spell to perform magic. She is also shown to be remarkably bright and a quick learner, capable of mastering new information and skills, like riding a bicycle or studying, at an astonishing pace once she puts her mind to it.
