Description
Poppu Harukaze, also known as Pop Harukaze, is the younger sister of Doremi Harukaze and the fourth witch apprentice to become part of the group connected to the Maho-do. She is four years younger than Doremi and was born on September 9. In the early part of the story she attends Sonatine Kindergarten, and she later moves on to Misora First Elementary School. Her witch apprentice outfit is red, her companion fairy is Fafa, and she uses a trumpet-like magical instrument called a Poron. Her magical incantation is "Pipitto Puritto Puritan Peperuto," and during the group's Magical Stage she uses the incantation "Pipitto Puritto hogaraka ni." Unlike the other apprentices, she continues to use her original first-season outfit and items throughout later appearances.
Poppu became a witch apprentice at the age of four after witnessing Doremi, Hazuki, and Aiko using magic. Her stated reason for joining was that her older sister was doing it and it looked interesting. From an early age she shows a level of independence unusual for her years, such as being able to mind the shop on her own and knowing how to handle household appliances even while still in kindergarten.
In terms of personality, Poppu is reliable, capable, and mature for her age, and she is often admired by adults and classmates alike. She is the opposite of her clumsy and unfocused older sister, and she frequently criticizes Doremi, at first believing that Doremi is bound to fail at everything. She likes to describe herself as mature, but she remains a young child underneath, and her tendency to fall asleep easily at night prevents her from taking the witch apprentice examinations, which are held after dark. Despite her constant teasing, she genuinely loves Doremi's kindness and has followed after her sister since she was born.
Poppu's early motivation for magic is simply to be part of what her sister is doing. Over time she develops a serious and independent goal: she begins piano lessons while in kindergarten and dreams of becoming a professional pianist. In the later continuation of the story, she is in the sixth grade and studies diligently with the aim of entering Karen Girls Academy as a piano major. Her bond with Doremi also shapes her choices, as shown when Doremi decides not to become a full witch and Poppu tearfully declares that she will not become one either.
Poppu joins the witch apprentice group in the latter half of the first season and becomes a regular member from the second season onward. In the OVA series Ojamajo Doremi Na-i-sho, which focuses on expanding the personality and background of each main character, she is one of the central figures.
