TV-Series
Description
Daikaku Kokujouji is the Second King, known as the Gold King, within the series. Born into the Kokujouji family of traditional Japanese mystics, he inherited the family head name "Daikaku". In his youth, he served as a lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II and was dispatched to Dresden, Germany. There, he sought to break a deadlock in the research of a mysterious object called the Dresden Slate by introducing a different cultural perspective. During this time, he formed a deep friendship with the researcher Adolf K. Weismann and his sister, Klaudia.
Following the devastating Dresden bombing, which claimed Klaudia's life, Weismann became the Silver King. Sensing Germany's impending defeat, Daikaku took the Dresden Slate back to Japan and was himself chosen as the Second King, the Gold King. He invited a grieving Weismann to join him, but Weismann refused, choosing instead to seclude himself in a blimp for decades. Daikaku's personality is marked by a quiet, contemplative demeanor that contrasts with his immense authority as the undisputed ruler of Japan. He is a figure of great solemnity and strategic thinking, driven by a profound sense of duty to maintain order and stability. This seriousness is tempered by his enduring, if strained, loyalty to his old friend, Weismann, showing rare glimpses of vulnerability regarding his friend's fate. In his youth, he thought pragmatically about using the Slate's power to create superhuman armies, revealing a mind focused on national strength, yet he was also deeply affected by the casualties of war.
Daikaku's primary motivation is his role as the keeper of the Dresden Slate and, by extension, the guardian of human society. As the Gold King, his ability, "Destiny," allows him to draw out the maximum potential of individuals. He used this power to gather exceptional people into his clan, the Nonhisa-in, who are not just a fighting force like other clans but are leaders in politics, economics, science, and technology. Through this clan, Daikaku effectively controlled the Japanese government and its institutions, single-handedly leading the nation's post-war recovery and economic rise while ruling as a silent emperor behind the scenes. For over half a century, he focused his power on suppressing the Slate's influence, which minimized the number of superpowered individuals called Strain and kept the manifestation of new Kings confined to the Kanto region, thereby ensuring social tranquility. His motivation is not self-aggrandizement but the preservation of a stable world order, a duty he undertook for decades.
In the story, Daikaku serves as the ultimate foundation of the status quo, the strongest King whose presence deters open conflict among the other Kings and keeps the Slate's power in check. His authority is so absolute that he can authorize special permissions, such as allowing the Blue King, Reisi Munakata, to use a high-level ability called Royal Blue to solve a murder case. After the Silver King is seemingly killed, Daikaku retrieves Weismann's reincarnated form, the young student Yashiro Isana, and hides him from powerful enemies. Sensing his own mortality, he orders his clan to remain uninvolved in the ensuing conflict to ensure the nation's institutions continue to function. His most significant relationship is his old friendship with Adolf K. Weismann, whom he calls "Lieutenant" and who represents both a promise from a more hopeful past and a loss that changed his life. Their ideological differences regarding the use of power never truly broke their bond, and in his final moments, Daikaku is comforted by Weismann's presence. He also has a relationship of careful respect with the Blue King, Munakata, whom he tasks with managing the Slate after his death. His immense strength is tacitly acknowledged as a deterrent by his primary antagonist, the Green King Nagare Hisui, who only dares to act openly once Daikaku is gone.
Daikaku's character development is not one of dramatic change but of a slow, inevitable decline from his peak. In flashbacks, he is a tall, physically powerful military man. By the time the main story occurs, he is ninety-six years old, a frail and elderly figure who has spent his life's power containing the Slate. His development is in his long arc from an ambitious soldier seeking power for his nation to a wise and weary guardian who understands the heavy cost of stability. His journey concludes with his acceptance of death, looking at a new world he helped build but will not live to see, and passing his ultimate responsibility to a younger generation of Kings.
As the strongest King, also called the ruler of the earth, Daikaku's notable abilities are overwhelming. His primary power is the aforementioned "Destiny," which unlocks and amplifies the latent talents of others, making his clan exceptionally capable. Physically, he towers at two hundred ten centimeters and possesses an immense, absolute aura of power that eclipses all other Kings. This raw power allows him to single-handedly suppress the Dresden Slate, a feat no other King could replicate. On the rare occasions he fought, such as in a confrontation with the Green King Nagare Hisui, he proved decisively superior, defeating the second-strongest King and instilling a lasting fear that kept the Green King's ambitions in check for years. His authority is also a core ability, as his word alone dictates the direction of the entire nation, making his political and institutional control a fundamental expression of his power.
