TV Special
Description
Bernard Vilar is a central antagonist in the Lupin the Third television special, Record of Observations of the East - Another Page, also known as Lupin the Third: The Secret Page of Marco Polo. He is the powerful and ruthless president of Lombardo Heavy Industries, a massive manufacturing conglomerate he built from the ground up. The company produces aircraft and ships but derives much of its power and infamy from its activities as an international arms dealer, selling weapons to allies and enemies alike. This reputation has earned Vilar and his company the grim nickname The Merchant of Death. His ultimate ambition is to become the world's leading arms manufacturer, a goal he believes will grant him total control over global events.
Vilar is a calculating and arrogant individual, driven by power and profit rather than any idealistic motive. He is shown to be manipulative, using bribery and deals to secure alliances, such as when he won over Duke Abel of the Talia Republic with art pieces in exchange for weapons contracts. His business-first mentality is further demonstrated by his attempt to make a deal with the crime boss Bao Long, which was politely declined. Despite his professional ruthlessness, he has a personal side that includes a hobby of drinking, often seen enjoying a glass of wine as he oversees his schemes.
In the story, Vilar is the primary force driving the conflict, as he is determined to acquire Another Page, a missing and historically significant page from The Travels of Marco Polo. He believes this artifact holds a secret legacy that will further his power. To this end, he orchestrates the framing of master thief Arsène Lupin III for the murder of Professor Theo Argento, the archaeologist who discovered the page. Vilar’s role as the main antagonist sees him deploying his armed forces to retrieve the artifact and capture key individuals, including the professor’s granddaughter, Lisa Argento, whom he believes is essential to unlocking the page's secrets. His pursuit of Lupin, who is also after the treasure, forms the core of the special's plot.
Vilar's key relationships are largely transactional. He employs a large number of unnamed henchmen and has a professional alliance with the femme fatale Fujiko Mine, who agrees to help him capture Lisa. He also maintains contact with Claudio Berardi, a mole working within the late professor's circle. His relationship with Lupin is one of direct opposition; Vilar is willing to kill and destroy to get what he wants, seeing Lupin as a significant obstacle to be eliminated.
While Vilar does not undergo a significant personal transformation, his development is marked by his escalating desperation and overconfidence. He eventually gains control of a powerful satellite-based laser weapon called Zeal, which he uses in a final attempt to destroy Lupin and his companions. In a twist of fate, his own hubris leads to his demise when he is caught in the weapon's own blast and disintegrated. Vilar's notable abilities are not physical but strategic and resource-based. He commands a vast private army and possesses immense financial and industrial resources, which he uses to pursue his goals across the globe. His access to advanced technology like the Zeal satellite makes him a formidable and high-tech adversary.
