Description
Nagisa Momoe is a young magical girl who first appears in her human form in the film Puella Magi Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion. Her character is deeply connected to the original series, as she is the magical girl who ultimately became the witch known as Charlotte, the Dessert Witch. Prior to the events of Rebellion, it is understood that she was taken into the Law of Cycles, a conceptual force created by Madoka Kaname.
In terms of background, Nagisa's life as a magical girl was marked by profound loneliness and a troubled family situation. Her wish, made to Kyubey, was for a single cheesecake that her terminally ill mother would consider the best, driven by a desperate desire to earn her mother's affection and see her happy. Her mother, once an actress who became ill and was abandoned by her husband, resented Nagisa and subjected her to neglect and emotional abuse. The fulfillment of her wish did not bring the happiness she sought, and her subsequent despair transformed her into the witch Charlotte, who in another timeline famously defeated the magical girl Mami Tomoe. After Madoka's universe-altering wish, Nagisa's existence was subsumed into the Law of Cycles.
Personality-wise, Nagisa presents a duality that blends childish exuberance with surprising perceptiveness. She often speaks in an eloquent manner that belies her young age, using phrases that are more formal or complex than one might expect. Her behavior is energetic and playful, frequently providing moments of comic relief, but she also demonstrates a keen awareness of the situations around her. A defining and constant personality trait is her intense love for cheese, which drives many of her actions and is a recurring theme in her dialogue, including her transformation incantation "Parmigiano Reggiano!".
Nagisa's primary motivation for her role in the story is disarmingly simple: she wanted to eat cheese again. This lighthearted desire, however, is tied to a much more significant purpose. Alongside Sayaka Miki, she was sent by Madoka as an agent of the Law of Cycles to enter the labyrinth created by Homura Akemi's soul gem. Her mission was to help Madoka rescue Homura from Kyubey's experiment, which involved containing Madoka's power. To operate within the barrier without alerting Kyubey, Nagisa disguised herself in her witch form and went by the name "Bebe".
Her role in the story is therefore that of a hidden operative and a herald of Ultimate Madoka. She lives with Mami Tomoe, who, due to the memory-altering effects of Homura's barrier, believes Bebe is her oldest and most trusted friend. Nagisa maintains this guise while the group fights the false "Nightmares" that populate the world. She eventually reveals the truth of their situation to Mami and the others, apologizing for the deception. During the final battle against the witch Homulilly, Nagisa abandons her disguise, transforms into her magical girl form, and plays a crucial role in breaking down the barrier to allow Madoka to reach Homura.
Key relationships define her character, most notably with Mami Tomoe. The two form a close, almost familial bond; Mami acts as a caring, older sister or mother figure to the childlike Nagisa, who reciprocates this affection even while knowing the truth about their circumstances. Her other significant relationship is with Madoka and Sayaka, as they are her comrades within the Law of Cycles. She also shows a visible distrust and dislike for Kyubey, snarling at the creature on several occasions.
Nagisa undergoes a notable development, though much of it is tied to the film's cataclysmic conclusion. Initially a supporting character in disguise, she reveals herself as a capable magical girl with her own agency. After Homura Akemi successfully rewrites reality at the end of the film, Nagisa is separated from the Law of Cycles and reverted to an ordinary human child with no memories of being a magical girl. She is last seen happily integrating into a normal life, attending school with other children her age, though a final scene suggests her friendship with Mami may begin anew in this transformed world.
As for notable abilities, Nagisa possesses powers that are unique due to her status as an agent of the Law of Cycles. Her primary weapon is a trumpet styled after her witch form, which can shoot explosive soap bubbles powerful enough to crack a witch's barrier. Her magic is said to enhance her own self-assertiveness and greed, a reflection of her regret over her original, limited wish. A key ability is her power to shift between her human magical girl form and her witch form, Charlotte, as well as summon that witch's familiars, such as Pyotr and Polina. Her soul gem takes the shape of a white candy, reflecting her childlike and confectionary theme.
