Description
Alfonso Andretti, known simply as Al, is a central member of the crew aboard the research vessel Peperonchino. Serving as the ship’s first-mate, Al holds the crucial roles of both chef and engineer, making him indispensable to the daily operations and maintenance of the vessel. He is an Italian man with a large, overweight build and a personality that is generally jolly, easygoing, and loud. Despite his often laid-back and humorous demeanor, he is highly competent in his duties as an engineer and cook.

Al’s personality is marked by a notable greed and a constant eye for opportunities to make money. He frequently devises get-rich-quick schemes in the hopes of providing the crew with extra funds, revealing a somewhat immature and manchild-like side to his character. This greed is often played for comic relief, and he becomes visibly frustrated when other characters, such as Cheryl, exhibit the same opportunistic tendencies. Nevertheless, he is a loyal and dedicated member of Scott Simpson’s team, acting as a foil to the captain’s more level-headed and serious nature.

Within the story, Al serves as a mentor and an uncle-like figure to the younger members of the crew, particularly to the protagonist Nanami and later to Thomas LeConte, who becomes his unofficial apprentice. His relationship with the captain, Scott, is that of a trusted right-hand man and lancer, with the two having worked together closely for many years. Al also has a strained, sometimes humorous dynamic with the heiress Cheryl, particularly due to her initial reluctance to do work, which clashes with his practical, hands-on role on the ship.

Al’s background as an Italian is portrayed with a degree of cultural stereotype, being rambunctious and hammy. One story arc in the series focuses on his family in Italy, including his abrasive 94-year-old grandmother and a cousin named Enrico, who are depicted in a similarly stereotypical fashion. Al’s most pivotal moment in the series occurs during an incident in the Arctic. When his submersible becomes trapped in an ice crevice, the orca Tico heroically intervenes to save him. While she succeeds in freeing Al, the effort leaves her mortally wounded, leading to her death. This event makes Al an unwilling instigator of the tragedy that profoundly affects the entire crew, especially Nanami. The series also explores his capabilities, most notably his skill in piloting and maintaining the ship’s submarine, as well as his culinary talents that keep the crew fed during their long voyages.
