Description
Jubei Yamada is a character from the Fatal Fury 2 and Fatal Fury Special games who also appears in the anime adaptation Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle. He is an elderly Japanese man, born on July 7, 1922, which makes him seventy years old at the time of the story. He stands 156 centimeters tall and weighs 50 kilograms. In his youth, Jubei was a fierce and internationally recognized judo warrior whose prowess earned him the fearsome nickname The Demon. He was also a close friend and rival to Hanzo Shiranui, a master of Ninjutsu and the Koppo-ken style.

Having chosen a more peaceful existence in his old age, Jubei now passes his time running a dojo, watching over the progress of his many students, and eating Japanese crackers or cookies. Despite retiring from active competition, his spirit remains youthful. He refuses to simply wait for death and prefers to be where the action is, trying to live his remaining days with the vigor of a youngster. This passion for martial arts is revived by observing young fighters like Andy Bogard and Mai Shiranui, motivating him to step into the fighting arena from time to time.

His role in the story is largely tied to his position as a mentor. Jubei was entrusted with completing the training of Mai Shiranui after her grandfather, Hanzo, decided to train a young American boy named Andy Bogard in the Koppo-ken art instead. Jubei recognized Andy's tremendous potential as a fighter. In the Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle anime, Jubei serves as a supporting character, his presence reinforcing the connections between the younger fighters and the previous generation of martial artists. His relationship with his students is central to his character, and his connection to Hanzo Shiranui establishes him as a link to the history of the martial arts styles used by Andy and Mai. Certain portrayals also depict him with a comical, lecherous side, prone to acts such as peeping which creates friction with his students, particularly Mai.

Jubei Yamada is a master of traditional judo, and his fighting style is built around powerful throwing techniques. Possessing superhuman strength, he is capable of lifting and throwing opponents of any size. His repertoire of throws includes moves such as the Ippon Seoi, Tomoe Nage, and Kuma Koroshi. To compensate for his inability to fire energy projectiles like many other fighters, Jubei instead throws Japanese crackers or rice crackers known as Senbei Shuriken, which can be thrown at high speed to damage opponents. He also has a sliding kick and a dashing, unblockable throw called the Nihon Seoi Dash. In Fatal Fury 2, he was also known for having a dash-and-throw move, which was a first in fighting game history. In battle, his strategy often involves using his quick, short-range moves and projectile crackers to control the pace and set up his powerful grappling attacks.
