Description
Molly Hale is a five-year-old girl from the town of Greenfield and the daughter of Professor Spencer Hale, a researcher who studied Legendary Pokémon. Her mother had already disappeared earlier, and when her father vanishes during an archaeological expedition involving the mysterious Unown, Molly is left alone and grief-stricken. In her loneliness, she discovers a set of stone tiles that allow her to communicate with the Unown, and through her tears and wishes, she inadvertently activates their power. The Unown begin reading her deepest desires and reshape the world around her, turning Greenfield into a crystalline fantasy land. They also create a living illusion of the Legendary Pokémon Entei, which Molly believes to be her father, and this Entei kidnaps Delia Ketchum to serve as Molly’s mother, completing the imagined family she craves.
On the surface, Molly appears arrogant, selfish, and even cruel, as she uses the Unown’s power to protect her delusion and keep intruders out. However, beneath that exterior, she is a kind-hearted and deeply frightened child who simply longs for security and the return of her family. Her distrust of other people drives her to isolate herself within her crystal tower, and she shows strong ambitions to become a powerful Pokémon Trainer, once even asking Ash’s friend Misty whether a person has to be a grown-up to be a Gym Leader. Throughout the story, Molly’s motivations are rooted in fear of abandonment and a desperate need for love and stability. She does not intend to harm anyone; she is merely a lonely child acting on powerful emotions she cannot fully control.
As the central character of the film, Molly serves as both the primary antagonist and a sympathetic figure. Her actions drive the plot: the crystalization of Greenfield, the creation of the Entei illusion, and the kidnapping of Delia. Ash Ketchum and his friends must enter the crystal tower to reach Molly and help her see that the real world is better than the fantasy she has built. Along the way, Molly demonstrates her notable ability to manifest illusions through the Unown, including creating crystal versions of Pokémon, and she even temporarily changes her own apparent age to battle Brock as a teenager and Misty as a preteen. Her development comes when she finally realizes that she is not truly alone: Ash and his companions show her genuine kindness. She then refuses the Unown’s further help, and her illusory Entei ultimately sacrifices itself to save her from the uncontrolled power of the Unown. In the end, her parents both return, and the Hale family is reunited, leaving Molly with a renewed sense of security and a Teddiursa as a new companion.
