Description
Professor Spencer Hale is a Pokémon researcher from the town of Greenfield who appears in the third Pokémon theatrical film. He is the father of Molly Hale and lives with his family in a large mansion in Greenfield. Before the events of the film, he was one of Professor Oak's top students and a good friend of the Ketchum family, having known Ash's mother, Delia Ketchum, since childhood. His research focuses on the Unown, mysterious glyph-like Pokémon whose origins and powers he is determined to understand.

Spencer is described as intelligent and kind, and he is highly regarded by his fellow researchers. He is also deeply absorbed in his work, so much so that his research often takes him away from home and leaves his young daughter in the care of household staff. When he is with Molly, he is warm and playful, reading her stories and spending time with her, but his fascination with the Unown frequently pulls him away. In the Japanese version of the film, his wife left the family because of his fixation on his research; the English version instead depicts her as having disappeared while studying the Unown herself.

His main motivation is to uncover the secret behind the Unown. Early in the film, he is called away from home by his assistant, Skyler, who has located ruins in a remote desert. At the ruins, Spencer photographs ancient Unown symbols and discovers a collection of stone tablets bearing the Pokémon's images. When he handles the tablets, the Unown appear around him and transport him into their dimension, leaving Molly alone. This disappearance sets the film's story in motion: Molly, missing her parents, uses the tablets to summon the Unown, whose power reshapes her home and creates an illusionary Entei to act as a father figure in Spencer's absence.

Spencer remains trapped in the Unown dimension for most of the film and has little direct presence in the story during that time. His role is therefore defined largely by his absence and by the effect that absence has on his daughter. At the film's conclusion, after the illusionary Entei sacrifices itself and the Unown's power is undone, Spencer is released from their dimension and reunited with Molly. In the final scenes he is also reunited with his wife, who reappears after having been lost as well, allowing the family to come back together.

His notable abilities lie in his expertise as a researcher. He is shown observing, photographing, and analyzing Unown symbols and artifacts, and his academic background places him among the more accomplished Pokémon researchers of his generation. The film does not emphasize any skills as a Pokémon trainer; his significance is tied to his scientific knowledge of the Unown and to his relationship with his daughter.
