Description
Nadeshiko Fujisaki is a main character in the anime Shugo Chara!! Doki, though the identity of Nadeshiko is ultimately revealed to be a public persona rather than a separate individual. Nadeshiko is, in truth, the female-presenting name and role taken by a boy named Nagihiko Fujisaki. This arrangement is dictated by the traditions of the Fujisaki family, a household that preserves and passes down the art of traditional Japanese dance. For generations, the male children of the family have been raised as females during their childhood, dressing in girls' clothing and using a feminine name, as part of their training to eventually perform female roles in Japanese dance, known as oyama in kabuki theatre. As a result, during the early part of the series, Nadeshiko appears to be an elegant and refined girl who is a fifth-grade student at Seiyo Elementary School and holds the position of Queen's Chair on the school's Guardian organization.

In terms of personality, Nadeshiko is depicted as graceful, polite, and composed, embodying the ideal of a traditional Japanese lady. This outward demeanor is reinforced by a strong sense of responsibility and dedication to the duties of a Guardian. However, beneath this calm surface lies a more determined and even stubborn nature. Nadeshiko is not easily dissuaded once she sets her mind on something and can be quite persistent when pursuing a goal, as seen when she repeatedly tries to persuade Amu Hinamori to join the Guardians after Amu initially refuses. The character is also fiercely loyal to friends and protective of those considered important. The internal life of Nadeshiko is also shaped by the secret of the dual identity. There is a sense of duty to uphold the family's traditions while also navigating personal desires and friendships. When Nagihiko is not presenting as Nadeshiko, or when operating under the male identity, the personality is described as more reserved and serious, particularly regarding his responsibilities as a Guardian and a dancer.

The primary motivation for the character is the mastery of traditional dance and the fulfillment of the family's artistic legacy. This drives the decision to go abroad for further training. On a more immediate level, Nadeshiko is motivated by a sense of duty as a Guardian to protect the Shugo Chara and their eggs from negative influences and to support the other Guardians, especially Amu. There is also a personal motivation to resolve the complexities of the dual identity and to be accepted by friends for who the character truly is.

Within the story of Shugo Chara!! Doki, Nadeshiko plays a crucial role as one of the central members of the Guardians. Initially appearing as the Queen's Chair, Nadeshiko is instrumental in recruiting Amu and integrating her into the group. The character acts as a source of support, guidance, and friendship for Amu as she navigates her own insecurities and the challenges of being a Guardian. A major turning point in the narrative is the departure of Nadeshiko in episode 25, when Nagihiko leaves for England to study dance, marking the end of the Nadeshiko persona for that period. Later in the series, Nagihiko returns to Seiyo Academy but now attends as a male student, taking on the role of the Jack's Chair. This return and the revelation of the truth to the other Guardians mark a significant development in the character's arc.

Key relationships include the strong friendship with Amu Hinamori. Nadeshiko is one of the first people to welcome Amu and becomes a trusted confidante, offering advice and emotional support regarding Amu's personal and romantic struggles. Within the Guardian group, Nadeshiko shares close bonds with Tadase Hotori and Kukai Souma, who are among the first to learn the secret about Nagihiko being a boy. The relationship with these two characters is built on mutual respect and trust, particularly after the truth is disclosed. The character's Shugo Chara is Temari, who represents the desire to be more gracious and refined as a dancer. When Temari triggers a Chara Change with the phrase Chin Ton Shan, Nadeshiko's personality transforms into a more aggressive and combative state, speaking in a Hiroshima dialect and wielding a naginata. This change is believed to be a release of the suppressed desire to be a boy after years of strict training to be feminine.

Character development is centered on the reconciliation of the dual identity. The narrative arc moves from living under the secret of the female persona to the gradual reveal of the truth to trusted friends, followed by the adoption of the male identity at school. The character grows from someone bound by family tradition into someone who can embrace both sides of the identity. Returning as Nagihiko and taking on a new role as Jack's Chair demonstrates a maturity and acceptance of the true self. The journey shows a progression from hiding the core identity to openly living as Nagihiko while still maintaining the skills and grace learned as Nadeshiko.

Notable abilities include expertise in traditional Japanese dance, which gives the character exceptional grace, poise, and body control. The Shugo Chara Temari grants the ability to perform a Chara Change. This ability, called Yamato Maihime when transformed, enhances combat capabilities, allowing the use of a naginata, and reflects the fierce and determined side of the character's nature.
