Description
Hasgard is the Gold Saint of the Taurus constellation in the 18th century Holy War against Hades, as depicted in Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas. While his given name is Hasgard, he adopts the name of his constellation's brightest star, Aldebaran, when he dons his Gold Cloth. Of Portuguese origin and twenty-eight years old, he stands as one of the oldest and most experienced among the Gold Saints of his generation.
Known for his robust and imposing physical stature, Hasgard is recognized as the physically strongest and most agile among the twelve Gold Saints. Despite his formidable and intimidating appearance, he possesses a personality marked by profound wisdom, gentleness, and a protective nature. He greatly admired Ilias, the previous Leo Saint, for dedicating his life to using his power to shield the weak, and Hasgard fully adopted this philosophy as his own guiding principle. He carries himself with a sense of honor and respect for his fellow warriors; for example, he initially held suspicions about Asmita of Virgo but later expressed regret for not having spoken with him more before Asmita's sacrifice in service to Athena.
Hasgard's primary motivation is the absolute protection of Athena and the world from the forces of Hades. His ambition extends beyond mere victory in battle, focusing on safeguarding the future for the next generation. He is driven by a desire to leave a legacy, to clear a path for those who would follow, and to ensure a livable world for all children. This deep-seated protective instinct is most clearly embodied in his role as a mentor to three disciples: Salo, Teone, and Selinsa, whom he treats with great care and who serve as a source of inspiration and strength for him.
In the story, Hasgard first appears engaging in conversation with Dohko of Libra, discussing the state of the Sanctuary. His most prominent role begins when he single-handedly intercepts and defeats several Spectres who attempt to invade the Sanctuary. This act leads to his legendary confrontation with Kagaho of Benu, a powerful Spectre of the Star of Violence. The battle is intense and grueling, with Kagaho's dark flames managing to injure Hasgard and severely burn one of his eyes. Even while immobilized by Kagaho's Crucify Ankh technique and subjected to the devastating Corona Blast, Hasgard refuses to fall. Drawing upon the presence of his watching disciples for renewed strength, he unleashes his ultimate technique, Titan's Nova, to defeat Kagaho. Demonstrating his perceptive nature and belief in the potential for good in others, he spares Kagaho's life, sensing that the Spectre was not truly evil at heart.
Although wounded, Hasgard continues his duty to the very end. After Hades personally attacks the Sanctuary, Hasgard, still bearing his injuries, confronts two more Spectres sent by Pandora: Kiew of Durahan and Wimber of Wimber. He defeats Wimber quickly but is ultimately killed in a mutual, final exchange of powerful techniques with Kiew. However, he does not die in vain; his intervention is crucial for protecting Tenma, the Pegasus Saint, and his heroic stand allows others to continue the fight. In death, Hasgard remains a pillar of strength, and his spirit is later seen alongside the other fallen Gold Saints, lending their power from beyond to aid Sion and Dohko in their final assault against Hades. His last words are a testament to his life's mission: "For the generations."
Hasgard's development throughout the series is not one of radical change but of steadfast conviction. He begins as a wise and powerful guardian and remains so until his death, with his battles serving to reaffirm his philosophy of protecting others and to pass on his legacy to his disciples. His key relationships are with the other Gold Saints, particularly his friend and peer Dohko, his mentor figure Ilias, and most importantly, his three disciples who represent the future he fights to protect.
Regarding his abilities, Hasgard is a master of immense physical prowess and fighting speed, capable of moving and striking at the speed of light. He often assumes a traditional Iai stance with his arms crossed, a deceptive posture that is both defensive and offensive, allowing him to unleash tremendous power in an instant. His signature technique is the Great Horn, where he projects a massive wave of destructive cosmic energy from his open palms, often taking the form of a charging bull. His ultimate technique is the Titan's Nova, or Supernova Titânica. Abandoning his defensive posture, he strikes the ground to create a cataclysmic earthquake and explosion, hurling enormous rocks and energy at his opponent, overwhelming them with a force far exceeding that of the Great Horn. This technique exemplifies his approach to battle: direct, overwhelming, and final.
