TV Special
Description
Lupin the Third is the central protagonist of the crossover anime special Lupin III vs. Detective Conan. He is the grandson of the legendary gentleman thief Arsène Lupin and carries on the family tradition as a world-renowned master thief. Acknowledged globally as the number one wanted criminal, Lupin is a brilliant strategist and improviser, known for his exceptional skills in disguise, deduction, marksmanship, safe-cracking, and escape artistry. He often uses a comical, foolhardy demeanor to mask his sharp intellect and to catch opponents off guard. Despite his criminal pursuits, later anime portrayals depict him as increasingly honorable and compassionate, refusing to kill and occasionally stealing to help those in need.

Lupin’s primary motivation is the thrill of the heist itself; he is drawn to impossible challenges and the excitement of outsmarting his pursuers. He operates with a strict personal code that values fun and style over violence, and he delights in taunting his perennial adversary, Inspector Koichi Zenigata of the ICPO. His infatuation with women, particularly the cunning thief Fujiko Mine, is a notable weakness that often leads him into trouble, but it also fuels many of his schemes.

In Lupin III vs. Detective Conan, Lupin’s role is that of the charismatic, unpredictable thief who becomes entangled in a royal conspiracy in the kingdom of Vespania. While his stated goal is to steal the queen’s crown, he also harbors a deeper, more personal motive that brings him into direct competition and uneasy cooperation with the young detective Conan Edogawa. The special highlights Lupin’s ability to adapt quickly, his clever use of gadgets and misdirection, and his willingness to work alongside rivals when the situation demands it. His interactions with Conan are marked by mutual respect and playful rivalry, as both characters rely on intelligence and resourcefulness.

Key relationships include his loyal partners: the quick-draw marksman Daisuke Jigen, the samurai Goemon Ishikawa XIII, and the femme fatale Fujiko Mine. Though Fujiko frequently double-crosses him, Lupin remains hopelessly drawn to her, and their relationship is a complex mix of romance, rivalry, and partnership. His cat-and-mouse dynamic with Inspector Zenigata is a constant source of tension and comedy. Throughout the special, Lupin displays his core traits: charisma, ingenuity, a sense of humor, and an underlying integrity that sets him apart from more ruthless criminals. He is a gentleman thief whose adventures are driven by the love of the game rather than greed, and his development across the series and this crossover reaffirms him as a flawed but ultimately sympathetic rogue.
