Description
Doji, known as Daidoji in the original Japanese version, is a central antagonist in the Beyblade: Metal Fusion series. He serves as a high-ranking executive of the Dark Nebula, a shadowy organization with ambitions of world domination. His primary goal throughout the series is to harness the immense, destructive power of the Forbidden Bey, Lightning L-Drago. Doji is instrumental in locating this ancient Beyblade and, alongside the powerful blader Ryuga, steals it from Koma Village, the hometown of the protagonist Gingka Hagane. As the head of Dark Nebula, Doji orchestrates many of the organization's schemes, most notably creating and overseeing the Battle Bladers tournament. While appearing to be the mastermind, it is later revealed that Doji himself was taking orders from Dr. Ziggurat, the true owner of Dark Nebula, who had assigned Doji to raise Ryuga and unleash L-Drago's power.
In terms of personality, Doji is defined by his unsettling calmness and extreme arrogance. He rarely shows signs of stress or seriousness, even when facing powerful opponents like Gingka, and has a strong aversion to revealing his own true power in battle. He always speaks in a polite and measured tone but frequently uses condescending terms like my friend, which masks a deep-seated belief that no one is on his level. Doji is exceptionally cruel and manipulative, viewing other bladers not as people but as tools or sources of energy to be fed to L-Drago when they fail him. He possesses a keen intellect and a talent for psychological manipulation, able to play on others' emotions to get what he wants. For example, he easily agitates the hot-headed blader Kyoya Tategami into betting his freedom on a match and later uses taunts to disrupt Ryuga's focus. Underneath this composed exterior, Doji has strange, almost neurotic, private fixations. He claims to hate cacti with a passion, but the true reason is that they are too prickly for him to hug, revealing an underlying obsession with things he cannot have. He also has a peculiar fondness for drinking orange juice from fancy wine glasses, claiming it replenishes his vitamins, and enjoys eating dry-cured ham and goat cheese.
Doji's background is largely shrouded in mystery, with little known about his life before the events of the series. His role in the story is multi-faceted. At the start of Metal Fusion, he works from the shadows, mentoring and manipulating Ryuga, whom he had placed into a coma to allow L-Drago's dark power to fully awaken. He keeps a low profile by watching Gingka's battles until he decides to act, approaching Kyoya after his defeat to Gingka. Doji offers Kyoya a chance to become stronger, and after easily defeating Kyoya in a battle with his Beyblade, Dark Wolf, he forces the young blader into servitude. He also gives Kyoya's friend Benkei a new Beyblade, Dark Bull, as a means to an end. As the series progresses, Doji takes a more active role, inviting Gingka and his friends to the Dark Nebula Castle, setting numerous traps, and eventually taking over as the Master of Ceremonies for the Battle Bladers tournament. He uses this position to manipulate the bracket, ensuring that defeated bladers are sent to have their energy drained by Ryuga.
Doji's key relationships are almost entirely transactional. His most significant partnership is with Ryuga. Doji views Ryuga as the ultimate weapon, his pawn for ruling the world, and is initially loyal to training him. However, this relationship sours when Ryuga, having grown immensely powerful, decides he has no further use for a fearful Doji and uses L-Drago to drain his life energy, leaving him for dead. This event causes Doji's physical appearance to change drastically in subsequent seasons, forcing him to wear a long coat, a top hat, a monocle over a scarred eye, and use a walking cane with an artificial leg. Despite this near-fatal betrayal, Doji remains obsessed with power and returns in Beyblade: Metal Fury, where he seeks out the legendary blader Rago and brings him to the villain Pluto. He continues to taunt Ryuga at every opportunity, demonstrating his deep-seated grudge. Another notable relationship is with the young blader Yu Tendo, whom Doji recruits. The two share a unique rapport, and Doji seems to consider Yu the only person who had the potential to be a true friend. He also has a manipulative relationship with his own AI assistant, Merci, whom he uses to gather data and run his operations.
Doji's character undergoes significant development across the Metal Saga. In Metal Fusion, he is the cool, calculating, and elegantly dressed master of ceremonies, manipulating events from his high-tech office. Following his supposed death at Ryuga's hands, he reappears in Metal Fury physically broken but mentally as sharp as ever, his new gothic appearance reflecting his trauma and resilience. He finally becomes the main antagonist in Shogun Steel, where he is revived in a non-corporeal form by Merci. He is converted into light energy and stored within a computer system, becoming Robo Doji. In this form, he is the secret mastermind behind a new organization called DNA, which stands for Dark Nebula Again, seeking to use the Synchrome System for revenge and to once again try to rule the world.
As a blader, Doji wields the Balance-type Beyblade known as Dark Wolf DF145FS. In the manga, he first uses a different Beyblade, Wolf D125B, before upgrading to Dark Wolf after its destruction. His primary special move is called Darkness Howling Blazer, a powerful attack that can trap opponents in a dark vortex. He also possesses the ability, when he removes his glasses during a battle, to project a dark aura that can envelop his opponent in a bottomless black hole. Doji is a formidable tactician in battle, using his intellect to identify and exploit his opponent's weaknesses, as he did against Kyoya. However, while powerful, his combat abilities are ultimately surpassed by the main bladers, leading to his defeat at the hands of characters like Gingka and his father, Ryo Hagane, who battles under the alias Phoenix.
