Description
Hikaru Hasama is a character from the Beyblade Metal Fusion anime who initially appears as a talented and ambitious Blader before taking on a new role as a supportive assistant to the World Beyblade Battle Association. She is a young girl with cool blue hair and bluish-purple eyes. Her original outfit consists of a red jacket over a white and blue shirt, tan shorts, brown boots, a choker, and white gloves that extend to her wrists. After her final defeat as a competitor, she adopts a more professional look, wearing a dark blue suit and skirt with black high heels, along with a red ribbon on her wrist.
Hikaru’s personality is shaped by a difficult history in competitive Beyblading. As a child, she frequently lost battles, and her opponents would cruelly mock her tears. This led her to become cold and uninterested in others, focusing solely on finding and defeating stronger bladers to prove herself. Her ill mother encouraged her to never abandon her goals, instilling in Hikaru the belief that determination is everything. This backstory explains her initial aloof and reserved demeanor when she first arrives in Metal Bey City. However, after meeting Gingka Hagane and his friends, she begins to warm up, learning to enjoy battles rather than viewing them purely as a means to an end. Following a deeply traumatic defeat, she becomes much more gentle and professional, though she always retains her serious, calm attitude.
Hikaru’s primary motivation is initially to rise to the top by defeating the strongest bladers, which brings her to Metal Bey City in search of Gingka. She dreams of becoming the best, but this ambition is ultimately shattered by a devastating loss. Her experience in that battle leaves her so traumatized that she develops symptoms akin to post-traumatic stress disorder, causing her to give up competitive Beyblading entirely. Her new motivation becomes ensuring that others do not have to suffer the same negative experiences she did, leading her to work for the WBBA to promote fun and safe battling for everyone.
In the story, Hikaru serves as both a rival and an ally. She first appears challenging members of the Face Hunters, easily defeating them before seeking out Gingka. Her initial clash with Kenta Yumiya, who pretends to be Gingka, results in her winning eight consecutive battles before Kenta finally manages to defeat her, a loss that earns Kenta her respect. During the Survival Battle arc, she forms a temporary tag team with Kyoya Tategami to defeat cowardly bladers who attempt to ambush them mid-battle. Her most significant role comes during the Battle Bladers tournament, where she qualifies but is immediately pitted against the fearsome Ryuga. This battle proves to be her last, as Ryuga’s overwhelming power, using his beyblade Lightning L-Drago, leaves her in a comatose state for the remainder of the tournament. After recovering, she transitions away from being an active blader and becomes the assistant to Ryo Hagane, Gingka’s father, at the WBBA.
Hikaru’s key relationships include her rivalry and eventual friendship with Kenta Yumiya, whose determination she comes to admire. She also shares a mutual respect with Kyoya Tategami, having battled him to a standstill before teaming up with him. Her relationship with Gingka is pivotal; his encouragement to focus on having fun rather than just winning helps her begin to change her outlook. Her single defining relationship is with Ryuga, whose overwhelming power traumatizes her so deeply that she can no longer face him or his dark energy without distress, effectively ending her career as a Blader.
Hikaru undergoes a significant transformation in her development. She starts as a hardened, wandering nomad who only cares about getting stronger. Through her battles, friendships, and crushing defeat, she evolves into a calm, gentle, and professional support staff member who has completely left competitive battling behind. Although she largely retires her beyblade, Storm Aquario 100HF/S, she is still capable of using it in emergencies when necessary, such as when she helps fight off security to allow Gingka to board Hades City.
In terms of abilities, Hikaru is a highly skilled Blader, though her record shows a pattern of losses against the series’ strongest characters. Her Beyblade, Storm Aquario, is water-based and known for its speed and agility. Her signature special move is the Infinite Assault, known as the Infinite Wave in some versions, which allows Aquario to move so fast that it creates multiple illusory copies of itself to confuse and overwhelm an opponent before striking. She also demonstrates considerable leadership and tactical skill, such as when she and Kyoya coordinate to quickly take down multiple opponents at once. Despite her relatively short time as an active competitor, Hikaru remains a notable figure because she was the only female Blader to qualify for the Battle Bladers tournament.
