Description
Kyoya Tategami is introduced as the formidable leader of the Face Hunters, a gang that preys on weaker bladers to steal their Beypoints and assert dominance. He carries himself with an intense pride and a cold, calculating demeanor, believing that strength is the only thing that matters and that weaker opponents are merely stepping stones. His initial motivation is to prove himself the strongest by crushing any challenger, especially after hearing rumors of a powerful new blader named Gingka Hagane. This ruthless ambition is reflected in his aggressive battle style, where he uses his Rock Leone to overwhelm opponents with brute force and merciless attacks.
His personality shifts dramatically after a series of defeats and betrayals. Following his first loss to Gingka, he accepts an offer from the manipulative Daidoji of the Dark Nebula, who promises to make him strong enough to win a rematch. Instead, Kyoya is left to survive the harsh conditions of Wolf Canyon, where he narrowly escapes a wolf pack and unlocks a wild, destructive power within himself. This experience makes him more feral and ruthless, but it also leaves him vulnerable. After he loses again to Gingka, Daidoji attacks him while he is down, severely injuring him and damaging his Bey. Madoka, a Bey mechanic allied with Gingka, repairs Rock Leone and tends to Kyoya’s wounds despite their former hostility. This act of selfless kindness awakens a buried sense of honor in Kyoya, and he decides to disband the Face Hunters and temporarily ally with Gingka’s group to take down the Dark Nebula.
Over the course of the series, Kyoya evolves from a mere antagonist into a proud, independent ally and eventually one of the legendary bladers. His deepest motivation becomes the pursuit of true strength, not through domination, but by pushing his own limits and respecting the bonds he forms with his Bey and his rivals. He maintains a fierce, often aloof exterior, but he grows to value loyalty and fair competition. His most significant relationship is with Gingka, whom he considers his ultimate rival; their battles are charged with mutual respect and a drive to surpass each other. He also shares a long-standing connection with Benkei, his former subordinate, who remains loyal to him even after the gang disbands and becomes a close friend. Kyoya’s dynamic with Ryuga, another powerful antagonist, adds further depth, as he refuses to be second to anyone and constantly seeks to prove himself.
In battle, Kyoya commands Rock Leone, a defense and stamina type Bey with a distinctive lion motif. His notable abilities include devastating special moves such as Lion Gale-Force Wall, which raises a powerful wind barrier; Lion 100 Fang Fury, a flurry of slashing attacks; Lion Wild Wind Fang Dance, a spinning assault that creates a destructive vortex; and King Lion Tearing Blast, his ultimate technique. His blading style relies on unyielding defense, sudden counterattacks, and a deep synchronization with his Bey’s spirit. Throughout his journey, Kyoya’s greatest development lies in learning that strength is not merely physical dominance but the unwavering will to protect one’s pride and the people who matter, transforming him from a vengeful gang leader into a resilient and honorable blader.
