Description
Audrey Burne is the alias used by Mineva Lao Zabi, the central female protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam UC. She is a sixteen-year-old girl of slight build and composed bearing, who carries the heavy legacy of her family as the last heir of the Zabi dynasty, which once ruled the Principality of Zeon. Born during the One Year War as the daughter of Dozle Zabi, she lost her family in the conflict's aftermath and was taken to the asteroid Axis, where she was cared for by future Neo Zeon leaders Haman Karn and Char Aznable. For much of her early life, she served as a symbolic political figurehead, with Haman ruling as regent in her name. By the time of the first Neo Zeon War, a body double had secretly replaced the real Mineva, allowing her to be spirited away to safety—rumored to have been arranged by Char—where she lived in hiding for years before eventually being found and taken under the care of the Neo Zeon remnant faction known as the Sleeves.

In the year Universal Century 0096, learning of the Sleeves plan to obtain Laplace's Box, an artifact with the power to overthrow the Earth Federation government, Mineva becomes deeply worried that acquiring it will spark another devastating war. Feeling a profound sense of responsibility to atone for her family's role in past conflicts, she secretly journeys to the colony Industrial 7, using the name Audrey Burne to disguise her identity and hoping to persuade the Vist Foundation, the keepers of Laplace's Box, to cancel the transfer. It is during this clandestine mission that she first encounters a student named Banagher Links, who rescues her and agrees to help her reach her destination.

Personality-wise, Audrey is defined by a strong sense of resolve, a pacifistic nature, and a quiet but unyielding dignity. Despite being born into a life of aristocracy, she rejects the Zeonic supremacist movement of her family and is tired of the endless cycle of bloodshed it has caused. She is not interested in ruling or reclaiming her royal legacy; her primary motivation is the prevention of further war, and she is willing to betray her own faction and sacrifice herself for the greater good of both Earth and space-dwelling people. While she carries herself with a maturity and seriousness beyond her years, she also shows moments of awkwardness when confronted with ordinary civilian life, such as being surprised at the idea of eating a hot dog while walking down the street, though she retains her composure in all situations. Observers have noted that she possesses an appetite reminiscent of her father, Dozle Zabi.

Throughout the story, Audrey's role evolves from a fugitive seeking to prevent a conspiracy to a key figure at the center of the conflict surrounding Laplace's Box. Her journey takes her from the secretive negotiations on Industrial 7 to the Earth Federation warship Nahel Argama, where her true identity is eventually revealed to those around her. As Mineva Lao Zabi, she becomes a political bargaining chip and a target for various factions, but she refuses to be a passive victim, consistently seeking a way to open Laplace's Box in a manner that will bring about genuine understanding rather than destruction. Her key relationships are central to this development. With Banagher Links, the pilot of the Unicorn Gundam, she forms a deep and complicated bond; he is one of the few who sees her not as a princess or a symbol, but simply as Audrey, and he continues to call her by that name even after learning her true lineage. She also has significant interactions with Riddhe Marcenas, a Federation pilot whose family is entangled with the conspiracy, and with Captain Zinnerman and Marida Cruz of the Sleeves, who have their own personal histories tied to the Zabi legacy.

Audrey undergoes notable development from a girl trying to escape her bloody fate to one who chooses to confront it directly. Initially, she tries to act alone, coldly pushing Banagher away to keep him out of danger. However, as the crisis escalates, she learns to rely on others and accept their support. When faced with the prospect of hiding under the protection of the powerful Marcenas family, she rejects it, stating that such a life would not be true freedom and that she will not defy her fate, choosing instead to take an active role in shaping the future. In terms of abilities, while she is not a mobile suit pilot, she is astute, politically knowledgeable, and possesses high-level diplomatic skills honed from her childhood as a political figurehead. She is also noted to have the potential of a Newtype, though unlike many others with this ability, she was never exploited as an experiment or a soldier, possibly due to Char Aznable's efforts to protect her. Her true strength lies in her unwavering will and her ability to inspire others to act not out of hatred or obligation, but out of a sincere desire to do what is right.
