Description
Stephanie Sheh is an American voice actress, ADR director, writer, and producer, widely recognized for her extensive contributions to English dubs of anime, animated series, and video games. Born on April 10, 1977, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, she was raised in Northern California and spent a significant part of her childhood in Taiwan. She is of Han Chinese descent, with her mother from China and her father from Taiwan, and she speaks multiple languages, including Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien. Sheh developed an interest in acting during high school and later attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she was involved in anime clubs and graduated in 1999. After college, she initially worked as a producer while pursuing acting, training at institutions such as the Second City Training Center and the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.
Sheh began her voice acting career in 2001 under the moniker Jennifer Sekiguchi, with her debut role as Silky in I'm Gonna Be An Angel!. During this time, she worked at Synch-Point, an anime production company, where she also produced dubs. Her early breakthrough came with the role of Mamimi Samejima in the cult classic FLCL in 2003, a part she secured while collaborating with ADR director Marc Handler. This led to a string of prominent roles in major anime series throughout the 2000s. She became known for voicing Hinata Hyuga in the long-running Naruto franchise, Orihime Inoue in Bleach, and the title character Eureka in Eureka Seven. All three series aired on Cartoon Network, significantly raising her profile. Another iconic early role was Mikuru Asahina in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Her career continued to expand with a wide variety of characters, demonstrating her versatility. She voiced the cheerful Yui Hirasawa in K-On!, the mischievous Neko in K, and the complex Nui Harime in Kill la Kill. She also took on the role of Illyasviel von Einzbern in the Fate/stay night franchise. A major milestone came in 2014 when Viz Media announced she would be the new English voice of Usagi Tsukino / Sailor Moon for the redub of the original Sailor Moon anime and its sequel, Sailor Moon Crystal, a role she has continued in subsequent films like Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal. She also voiced Mitsuha Miyamizu in the critically acclaimed film Your Name. and Yui in the Sword Art Online series.
Beyond acting, Sheh has extensive experience behind the microphone. She has worked as an ADR director and casting director on numerous projects, including Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and video games like Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4. Her work in the video game industry is also notable; she has provided voices for characters such as Rebecca Chambers in the Resident Evil series, Tharja in Fire Emblem Heroes, and Cereza in Bayonetta, for which she also performed motion capture in Japan. In 2011, she founded the fundraising organization We Heart Japan in response to the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. She has also been recognized for her writing, receiving an Annie Award nomination for Best Writing in 2019 for her work on the film Mirai. Her recent and ongoing work includes roles in Star Wars: Visions, Komi Can't Communicate, and the new Ranma 1/2 remake.
