Description
Illyasviel von Einzbern, often called Ilya, is the representative of the Einzbern family in the Fifth Holy Grail War. She is a homunculus, an artificial being created through alchemy, but she is unique as she was born naturally from the homunculus Irisviel von Einzbern and the mage Kiritsugu Emiya, making her a hybrid of human and artificial life. As the product of the Einzbern's centuries-long pursuit of the Holy Grail, her body was heavily modified even before birth to serve as the vessel for the Grail, a role that ultimately defines her existence.
In terms of appearance, Illyasviel looks like a young girl, standing at 133 cm tall with long silver hair and crimson eyes inherited from her mother. However, she is chronologically eighteen years old during the events of the Fifth Holy Grail War, which makes her slightly older than her adoptive brother, Shirou Emiya. Her youthful appearance is a direct result of the extensive magical alterations made to her body, which stunted her physical growth and halted her development before adolescence. Despite her small stature, she possesses an immense and unparalleled capacity as a Master, with the majority of her body composed of magical circuits that also serve as her Command Spells, visible as red patterns across her skin when she channels magical energy.
Illyasviel presents a complex and contradictory personality. On the surface, she is often cheerful, playful, and displays a childlike innocence. She enjoys pleasantries and can be charming, even calling Shirou her "big brother" when they first meet. However, this innocent demeanor masks a profound moral ambiguity. Due to her upbringing and lack of conventional social education, she possesses a weak ethical framework and can be ruthlessly callous, showing little to no hesitation in killing others if she deems it necessary. This duality makes her both a natural angel and a natural demon, capable of casual cruelty one moment and genuine affection the next. Her loneliness, stemming from a childhood spent isolated in the Einzbern castle with no friends her own age, is a driving force behind her desire to connect with others, particularly Shirou.
Her primary motivation is deeply rooted in her family history. She harbors intense and conflicting feelings regarding her father, Kiritsugu Emiya, who she loved deeply as a child. After Kiritsugu destroyed the Holy Grail in the previous war, the Einzbern family perceived this as a betrayal and prevented him from ever seeing Illyasviel again. Groomed by the family to hate her father for abandoning her, she never learned of his repeated, failed attempts to rescue her. This anger and sense of betrayal are transferred to his adopted son, Shirou Emiya, whom she sees as the reason her father stayed in Japan. She is jealous of Shirou for receiving the love and attention she was denied, while simultaneously feeling a strong and confusing familial bond with him as an older brother figure. This conflicting dynamic defines her role in the story, as she is both a dangerous enemy and a potential ally.
In the narrative of the Holy Grail War, Illyasviel is the Master of the Servant Berserker, the legendary Greek hero Heracles. She was able to summon him two months before the war officially began, using a slab of rock from a temple as a catalyst. The Einzberns cheated the system by gathering materials from the Greater Grail, which allowed for this early summoning. Her role is that of a powerful antagonist who initially seeks retribution against Shirou. However, her trajectory ultimately leads to tragedy, as she was also designed from birth to be the new vessel of the Holy Grail, a process that requires her to absorb the souls of defeated Servants. Her body can only contain the souls of up to four Servants before she begins to lose her human functionality. During the Unlimited Blade Works route, she is confronted and killed by the Servant Gilgamesh, who tears out her heart to use her body as the core for the Holy Grail.
Her most significant relationship is with her Servant, Berserker. After an initial lack of synchronization, the two bonded deeply when he protected her from a wolf attack in the wilderness, a trial orchestrated by the Einzbern family. She comes to view the massive, mute hero as a protector and even a father figure, a sentiment that Berserker seemingly reciprocates through his unwavering loyalty. Her relationship with Shirou is the other cornerstone of her character, evolving from antagonistic and vengeful to a more affectionate, sisterly clinginess after her defeat in some story paths, though her fate in the Unlimited Blade Works route prevents this development. She is attended by two other homunculi, the stern Sella and the laid-back Leysritt, who act as her maids and guardians.
Within the Unlimited Blade Works story, Illyasviel's development is tragically cut short. She does not experience the redemption or prolonged bond with Shirou that occurs in other routes. After being defeated and killed by Gilgamesh, her role as a living character ends, serving instead as a grim catalyst for the final conflict and an illustration of the Holy Grail War's brutal nature. Throughout the series, Illyasviel demonstrates several notable abilities. As a Master, her power is virtually unmatched, possessing a vast number of high-quality Magic Circuits and an unlimited supply of mana that allows her to control the immensely powerful Berserker with ease. Her Command Spells are carved across her entire body, granting her absolute authority. In combat, she can use strands of her silver hair to create high-performance bird-like familiars called Zelle, which can act as her eyes or attack her enemies, a technique inherited from her mother. As the living vessel of the Holy Grail, her primary function is to act as the core of the system, a duty that ultimately overrides her personal desires and leads to her demise.
