Description
Kasuga is a fictional character from the anime and video game series Sengoku Basara, introduced as a kunoichi, or female ninja, serving the powerful warlord Uesugi Kenshin. Her very existence as a ninja is a work of fiction for the series, and her name is believed to be derived from Kenshin's primary fortress, Kasugayama Castle.
Kasuga's background is defined by a single, life-changing mission. She was originally from a ninja village, possibly the same one as her rival, Sarutobi Sasuke. Her assignment was to assassinate Uesugi Kenshin. However, upon seeing her target, she experienced love at first sight and was unable to complete her mission. This failure resulted in her being banished from her village, after which she chose to devote her life to serving the man she was meant to kill.
Her entire identity and personality are built upon unwavering loyalty and devotion to Kenshin, whom she serves as his personal spy and right-hand protector. She is often completely overwhelmed by his presence or praise, reacting with visible, euphoric adoration. While she takes her duties with the utmost seriousness, her emotions can run high, and she has been noted to become so worked up that she forgets her ninja composure. Despite her profession, she is described as being too kind-hearted at her core, and she is a reluctant warrior who wishes for the fighting to end.
In the story, Kasuga acts as the steadfast guardian of Kenshin. Her role often places her in direct conflict with the forces of Takeda Shingen, particularly his own ninja, Sarutobi Sasuke. This creates a key relationship marked by fierce rivalry and belligerent sexual tension, where the two are often at odds but share a past connection. She is also noted to have a rivalry with Nōhime, due to their similar roles as the devoted protectors of powerful warlords.
While Kasuga’s character remains largely consistent in her devotion to Kenshin, her story does explore her emotional development, particularly when her master is threatened. In one storyline, after Kenshin is gravely wounded, she embarks on a roaring rampage of revenge against Oda Nobunaga and is captured in the process, requiring rescue by Sasuke. In another narrative following Kenshin's death, she is driven to a state of complete, berserk madness with hatred, requiring intervention from others to help her recover. These events highlight that her entire sense of purpose is tied to Kenshin, and his loss threatens to undo her completely.
Kasuga is a highly capable ninja with several notable abilities. She wields weapons that have changed over time, from two small ringblades in her first appearance to two sets of four kunai attached by wires in later versions. Her combat style is graceful, fast, and acrobatic. Her elemental attribute is light, which allows her to create dazzling illusions, stun enemies, and disappear in a flash. Among her known techniques are creating a box of light to trap foes, sending forth a clone of light to attack, and throwing an array of light shuriken that automatically strike nearby enemies.
