Description
Histoire is an artificial being who serves as the living record of Gamindustris history and the Oracle of Planeptune, one of the four nations in her world. She manifests in two primary states: as a dark blue tome with gold trim and a green gem, and as a small, fairy-like humanoid with light skin, dull blue eyes, and blonde hair worn in curled pigtails with a distinctive headdress. Her physical appearance shifts subtly across different games and dimensions, sometimes appearing slightly older or younger, but she consistently presents as a youthful, delicate figure who often floats while seated on or near her book form. In the Ultra Dimension, she is notably smaller, small enough to fit in a persons hands, which leads to her being affectionately called Mini-Histy.
Her personality is a blend of cheerful professionalism and quiet intensity. Histoire typically speaks in a pleasant, helpful manner and has a notable habit of using written emoticons at the end of her sentences, which gives her dialogue a unique, playful quality. Beneath this sweet exterior lies an exceptionally intelligent being with a strong sense of justice and a very low tolerance for laziness and irresponsibility. She is frequently shown lecturing Neptune, the CPU of Planeptune, at great length about her neglected duties, and she is not afraid to scold publicly or take drastic measures, such as expelling Neptune and her sister Nepgear from the Basilicom for chronic slacking. While she is incredibly hardworking and methodical, she is known for taking a significant amount of time to retrieve information or complete tasks, almost always measured in units of three, such as three hours, three days, or even three years. She becomes irritated or even explosive if called slow or if her functionality is insulted.
Histoire was created long ago by the original goddess of Planeptune to serve as the worlds historical archive and to prevent the misuse of immense power. Her origin differs between continuities; in some versions, she was created by the first goddess, while in others, she was created by the villain Arfoire, who separated a portion of her own power to give Histoire form. Regardless of her origin, her core purpose is to advise and guide the CPUs, maintain the balance of Gamindustri, and ensure the proper use of Share energy, which is the faith of the people. Her primary motivation is the preservation and proper governance of her world, and she works tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the nations running, often acting as the de facto administrator of Planeptune when its CPU is absent or neglectful.
In the story, Histoire acts as a guide, mentor, and quest-giver for the protagonists. In the original Hyperdimension Neptunia, she calls out to an amnesiac Neptune, guiding her to collect Key Fragments to break a seal and restore her memory. In Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, she is the one who sends the CPUs on a mission that leads to their capture, a failure that weighs heavily on her and gives her a more serious, guilt-ridden demeanor as she then directs Nepgear on a rescue mission. She is also a key figure in interdimensional events, such as in Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory, where she works with her Ultra Dimension counterpart to open portals and allow travel between worlds. Across all titles, she is the constant, reliable presence that the heroes turn to for information and strategic direction.
Her key relationships are centered around the CPUs of Planeptune, particularly Neptune and Nepgear. With Neptune, Histoire has a dynamic of frustrated caretaker and scolding parent, constantly trying to force the lazy protagonist to do her paperwork and fulfill her duties. With the more diligent Nepgear, Histoire has a much more cooperative and trusting relationship, often relying on her as the responsible one. She also maintains a connection with her counterpart in the Ultra Dimension, with the two communicating and working together to manage dimensional rifts.
Throughout the series, Histoire undergoes subtle but notable development. After her failure in mk2, she experiences a crisis of confidence, blaming herself for the CPUs imprisonment and questioning her judgment. In Megadimension Neptunia VII, she pushes herself beyond her specifications to aid Neptune, causing her to short-circuit and temporarily shut down, demonstrating her dedication and the physical limits of her artificial body. These moments add depth to her character, showing that despite her immense knowledge and power, she is not infallible and is deeply affected by the well-being of those she guides.
Histoire possesses a vast array of notable abilities befitting a living archive of reality. Her primary power is the manipulation of causality and history itself, allowing her to erase enemies by altering the records within her tome. She can control the fundamental forces of nature, summoning tornados, fire storms, ice storms, and lightning. She is capable of interdimensional travel and communication, able to create portals between dimensions and sense events occurring in other worlds. As the Oracle, she can manipulate Share Energy to perform miracles, purify corruption, and even power dimensional transfers. Her intelligence is superhuman, holding the complete history of Gamindustri, and her memory is proof against changes in reality, meaning she remains aware of events even when history is rewritten. In combat, she is a powerful magic user, and when she does fight, she channels the power of the universe or uses her tome to rewrite opponents out of existence. Her only significant limitation is that her most powerful reality-altering abilities require external permission due to security protocols, and the processing of complex tasks can cause her to overheat if she exceeds her specifications.
