Description
Angel Usukubo is a young woman with a dual heritage, being half-human and half-monster, which places her at the very center of the conflict between the Ranger Force and the Invaders. She is initially introduced as a candidate hoping to join the Dragon Keepers' Battle Force, specifically aiming for a position in the Green Battalion. During the intense final examination, she demonstrates remarkable tenacity, continuing to fight even after sustaining a leg injury and being abandoned by her own partner. In a crucial moment, she refuses to be underestimated, telling her opponent not to look down on her, and plays a key role in helping her team succeed by using her talent for sketching portraits to aid Footsoldier D in a strategic maneuver. After passing the exam and officially joining the Green Battalion, she participates in several missions, including a notable battle at the Amanogawa Central Zoo where she devises a daring tactic, using her Dragon Gadget to transform into a fireball and allowing herself to be swallowed by a monster to destroy it from the inside.
Following this event, Angel makes the significant decision to leave the Ranger organization entirely. It is then revealed that her time within the Dragon Keepers was actually an infiltration mission. Angel is the adopted daughter of Yakushi Usukubo, the chairman of the Invader Rights Association, an organization dedicated to ending the persecution of Invaders and achieving peaceful coexistence between the two species. Her true origin is that she is a war orphan taken in by Yakushi, and her unique half-monster nature stems from being the living vessel for Yurimerida, a powerful monster whose essence resides within Angel's right eye. She becomes an executive of the Invader Rights Association, and in this role, she confesses to having facilitated the infiltration of the Ranger's base by the Executive Peltrola to retrieve a device used in a secret experiment.
Angel's personality is marked by a calm, collected, and perceptive demeanor. While she can seem reserved, she possesses a fierce inner strength and great courage, never hesitating to stand up for herself or others. She values equality and does not believe anyone should be treated as special or be looked down upon. This strong will is tested severely when she discovers the full truth about her origins—that she is not biologically related to the man she calls father and that her very identity is tied to being a receptacle for another being. This revelation plunges her into a deep identity crisis, causing her to lose her sense of direction and blindly follow orders for a time. However, with the intervention of Footsoldier D and by learning to control the power of the Yurimerida relic within her, she is able to reclaim her agency and decide her own path forward.
Throughout her journey, Angel forms several key relationships that define her actions. She shares a strong bond with Hibiki Sakurama, the human alias used by Footsoldier D, and becomes one of his most trusted and loyal allies, eventually choosing to follow him as his devoted assistant. She also has complex feelings for her adoptive father, Yakushi, and for the monster Yurimerida, continuing to regard them as her true parents despite the painful revelations about her past. In terms of abilities, Angel is a skilled combatant who makes effective use of the Dragon Gadget in its Burst Form, which functions as a high-powered flamethrower. Her most notable non-combat skill is her exceptional ability to draw portraits, a talent that proves to be a crucial asset in battle. Her most defining characteristic, however, is her unwavering determination and ability to keep her composure under extreme pressure, allowing her to execute plans that require immense personal risk. As the story progresses, she also learns to share consciousness with Yurimerida and ultimately gains control over this power. Angel Usukubo serves as a living embodiment of the possibility of connection and the deep, tragic divide between humans and monsters, bringing both emotional depth and moral complexity to the narrative.
