Description
"Is This a Zombie? of the Dead" is the second season of the anime series "Is This a Zombie?" and continues the surreal and comedic adventures of Ayumu Aikawa, a high school student who has been resurrected as a zombie. The story picks up after the events of the first season, with Ayumu still navigating his bizarre life as a zombie servant to the necromancer Eucliwood Hellscythe, also known as Eu. Eu, a powerful and silent magical girl, communicates through written notes and wields immense magical abilities, though her emotions often remain enigmatic.
Ayumu’s life becomes increasingly complicated as he encounters a variety of supernatural beings. Among them is Haruna, a masou shoujo (magical girl) who wields a chainsaw and frequently clashes with Ayumu over her own agenda. Another key figure is Seraphim, a vampire ninja who initially opposes Ayumu but later becomes an ally. The group is further joined by Sarasvati, a magical girl from another dimension who seeks to challenge Haruna, and Kyoko, a detective investigating supernatural occurrences in the city.
The narrative revolves around Ayumu’s attempts to maintain a semblance of normalcy while dealing with the chaos brought on by his supernatural companions. The series blends action, comedy, and fantasy, often leaning into absurd and over-the-top scenarios. Ayumu frequently finds himself in ridiculous situations, such as transforming into a magical girl himself due to a curse, which becomes a recurring source of humor. The interactions between the characters drive much of the plot, with their clashing personalities and motivations creating both comedic and dramatic moments.
The second season introduces new challenges, including the arrival of a mysterious organization targeting Eu and her powers. This leads to heightened stakes as Ayumu and his allies must protect Eu while uncovering the true intentions of their enemies. The series maintains its lighthearted tone despite these threats, often undercutting serious moments with humor and slapstick.
Themes of friendship, loyalty, and identity are explored as Ayumu grows closer to his companions, each of whom has their own struggles and secrets. Eu’s past and the reasons for her immense power are gradually revealed, adding depth to her character. Haruna’s rivalry with Sarasvati and her own insecurities about her role as a magical girl provide additional layers to the story. Seraphim’s loyalty to Ayumu and her internal conflict as a vampire ninja further enrich the narrative.
"Is This a Zombie? of the Dead" builds on the foundation of the first season, expanding the world and delving deeper into the characters’ relationships and backstories. The series balances its comedic elements with moments of genuine emotion, creating a dynamic and engaging story. The blend of supernatural action, absurd humor, and character-driven drama makes it a distinctive entry in the genre.
