Description
Ayumu Aikawa is the male protagonist of the story. He is a seventeen-year-old student attending Class 1-C at Sōyū Gakuen. His life takes a fatal turn before the narrative begins when he is murdered by a serial killer. His fate is drastically changed when he is resurrected as a zombie by the necromancer Eucliwood Hellscythe, who he had met briefly in a convenience store parking lot. Following his revival, he becomes Eucliwood’s guardian and she comes to live in his home. His parents are traveling overseas, leaving him to live alone in a detached house, which he soon shares with a growing number of supernatural residents.
As a person, Ayumu maintains the personality he had in life despite his undead state. He is generally a nice and caring individual, though he often comes across as lazy, snarky, and somewhat perverted. He frequently daydreams about Eucliwood in idealized, cute scenarios, a habit she is fully aware of and which sometimes leads to embarrassing situations. In his daily life, he can appear weak-willed and is often the target of abuse and punishment from the girls in his household, particularly Haruna and Seraphim, making him a frequent victim of amusing injuries. However, this easygoing and perverted exterior hides a much more serious side. In times of conflict, he becomes a decisive, aggressive, and ferocious person who acts according to his conscience. He has a vengeful streak, as shown in his brutal assault on the serial killer Kyoko, but he also possesses a strong moral compass, ultimately sparing her when she begs for mercy. Despite the chaos and physical punishment he endures, he genuinely cares for and respects the people around him.
Ayumu’s primary motivation throughout the story is to protect Eucliwood Hellscythe. This vow to safeguard her is the core of his character development. He is also driven by a desire to live a normal life, a goal that is constantly thwarted by his absurd circumstances. His role in the story is that of a reluctant hero and the central pillar of a chaotic household. He is technically a servant to Eucliwood, but in practice he is often the one running the household and cleaning up the messes made by the other girls. He is forced into the role of a magical girl to fight monsters known as Megalos, which adds to his many personal struggles.
Ayumu has several key relationships that define his interactions. His most significant bond is with Eucliwood Hellscythe, whom he loves and cares for above all others. He realizes she is indispensable to him when she leaves home, and he eventually confesses his feelings, declaring her to be his precious treasure. Eucliwood, in turn, swears to stay by his side forever, and in the light novel’s conclusion, they both become ordinary humans and marry. He also has a complex relationship with the magical girl Haruna, from whom he accidentally absorbs magical powers, forcing him to become a magical garment girl and wield her chainsaw, Mystletainn. Haruna develops romantic feelings for him. The vampire ninja Seraphim, who comes to serve Eucliwood, initially despises Ayumu and constantly calls him names, but she gradually develops a grudging respect and later romantic feelings for him. Other girls who have feelings for him include the vampire ninja Yuki Yoshida (also known as Mael Strom), who considers them married after an accidental kiss, and the idol Sarasvati, who is attracted to his buttocks.
Throughout the series, Ayumu undergoes significant development. He starts as a boy who was murdered and brought back, struggling with his new identity as a zombie. As the story progresses, he masters his abilities and his role as a protector. He overcomes the limitations of his zombie identity, learning to push his body past its limits. He experiences several form changes, including temporarily becoming a busty woman named Aikawa Ayumi during a magical girl training camp. His journey concludes with him regaining his humanity and marrying Eucliwood, thus ending his life as a zombie and starting a new chapter as a normal human.
Ayumu possesses a variety of notable abilities stemming from his nature as a zombie and a magical girl. As a zombie, he has functional immortality, a powerful healing factor that allows him to survive and regenerate from severe injuries such as dismemberment, and the ability to manipulate his muscles. Through muscle manipulation, he can increase his strength up to 1000% of normal human limits, but using too much power causes his body to break down from the strain. His primary weakness is sunlight, which rapidly dehydrates him and can leave him in a mummy-like state. As a magical garment girl, he wields the sentient pink chainsaw Mystletainn and wears a frilly costume that embarrasses him. This transformation grants him the ability to fly and use magic, though he has little talent for it and can only perform simple spells like creating soup or emitting sunlight. His magical girl form also lessens his weakness to the sun. A notable technique is the "Mystletainn Kick," which is actually a slashing attack with his chainsaw. In combat, his right eye sometimes glows red when he is serious.
