Description
Eucliwood Hellscythe is a central character in the light novel and anime series where she is introduced as a powerful necromancer from the underworld. She was originally a member of a group known as the Seventh Abyss in her home realm. Due to the dangerous nature of her abilities while living in the underworld, she eventually relocated to the human world. It is there that she first met the story's protagonist, a high school student, in a convenience store parking lot, sensing that he was a special existence. After he was murdered by a serial killer, Eucliwood used her necromancy to resurrect him as a zombie, tasking him to act as her guardian. Following this event, she took up residence in his home.
Physically, Eucliwood is a short, pale girl of about 145 centimeters in height, with long, lustrous silver hair and blue eyes that give her the appearance of a living doll. She is most often seen wearing a set of silver platemail armor and metal gauntlets, which are not for physical defense but serve a specific magical purpose. Beneath this armor, she is known to wear blue and white striped underwear.
Her powers are considered continental in scale and are numerous. She is capable of resurrecting the dead, as demonstrated with the protagonist and the King of the Night. Eucliwood can also heal the wounds of others, but this ability comes at a significant cost, as she must personally bear the same pain that she heals in another person. Her blood contains potent magical properties; anyone who drinks a sufficient amount of it gains immortality, and it is revealed that an entire race of vampire ninjas was founded from a group who received her blood. She is also capable of absorbing magic from others, such as when she inadvertently stole all the powers of the character Haruna.
The defining aspect of Eucliwood's character is her reality-warping power. Her body stores a tremendous amount of magical energy, which causes her emotions to randomly change fate and create unpredictable magical phenomena around her. Far more controlled but still dangerous is her spoken word; every statement she utters becomes a literal reality, an ability known as a "speech-based reality warp". For example, if she were to say the word "die," any living being who hears her voice would instantly perish, regardless of any pre-existing immortality or defenses. Because her words function as an indiscriminate area-of-effect attack, Eucliwood has voluntarily stopped speaking. She communicates exclusively by writing down her thoughts on a small notepad, using it to talk with friends, order food, and express her opinions. The metal armor she always wears is a device called "Silence Restriction," which is tasked with suppressing her overwhelming power.
Eucliwood's personality is a direct response to the burden of her abilities. She projects a stoic, emotionless facade and almost never changes her facial expression. However, she cares deeply for the people around her, especially the protagonist and her other roommates. She has a surprisingly hearty appetite and is a food enthusiast with a particular love for pudding. She also enjoys eating oranges, though the white pith is a deadly poison to beings from the underworld, requiring her to meticulously peel each segment before eating. Because she understands the pain of death more intimately than almost anyone else, she hates hearing the word "die" used in casual conversation and once slapped the character Haruna for using it flippantly. The protagonist often daydreams about her talking in a cute, high-pitched voice, which stands in stark contrast to her actual silent demeanor.
Her primary motivation throughout the story is to live a quiet, peaceful life and protect those she cares about without her destructive powers causing harm. She suffers from low self-esteem and deeply curses her own abilities for being uncontrollable and dangerous. Eucliwood serves as the story's central catalyst and protector; her resurrection of the protagonist sets the entire plot in motion, and her existence is the reason many powerful enemies, such as the King of the Night, come to the human world to attack her.
In terms of relationships, her most significant bond is with the protagonist, who she resurrected. She refers to him as her servant, but she develops strong romantic feelings for him, which cannot be fully expressed through her notepad. He, in turn, accepts her completely and helps her learn to forgive herself. She lives in his home alongside the two other primary female characters: Haruna, a magical girl from whom she passively stole her powers, and Seraphim, a vampire ninja who is on a mission to request Eucliwood's aid. The King of the Night is an ancient, antagonistic figure who was originally a dear comrade in the underworld; after Eucliwood resurrected him, he grew to despise his own immortality and sought to goad her into using her death magic to finally kill him.
Eucliwood undergoes a notable character development as the story concludes. After a long period of using her powers to help others while suffering from the consequences and hating herself for her accidental past killings, she ultimately achieves peace. At the end of the light novel series, she is stripped of her necromancy powers. Freed from the burden of her reality-warping abilities and the need for her suppressing armor, she discards both and embraces a normal, quiet life with the protagonist. The narrative strongly implies that she eventually marries him, finally able to express her love without the barrier of her silent curse.
