Description
Ariel, known to most as Dai-sensei, is an instructor from the magical academy of Matellis, located in the kingdom of Villiers. Her title, which translates to Great Teacher, reflects her high status as a Grand Master of the Masou-Shoujo, the Magical Garment Girls, and she is acknowledged as the most powerful member of that group. Despite possessing a youthful and childlike exterior, Dai-sensei is over a century old, a fact that contrasts with her mature underlying demeanor.
She is characterized by a lighthearted, spacey, and perpetually cheerful personality, often maintaining a calm smile even when faced with dangerous situations. Her behavior can appear eccentric and thrill-seeking, as she rarely intervenes directly in conflicts and prefers to observe events unfold from a distance. However, this carefree exterior belies a fierce and unwavering loyalty towards her students; she does not hesitate to eliminate anyone who poses a threat to them. True to her role as an educator, she assigns missions to her pupils, such as dispatching Haruna to procure a specific type of Kyoto-made tofu, and monitors their progress through regular phone calls.
Dai-sensei's motivations are complex and somewhat mysterious. A century before the main events of the story, she orchestrated a failed coup d'état against Lilia Lilith, the Queen of Villiers. She appointed her own mentor, a character named Chris, as the leader of this rebellion. The plot ultimately collapsed, leading to Chris and other conspirators being cursed as punishment, while Dai-sensei managed to evade capture. While she has since publicly reformed, she continues to work against Villiers' warmongering policies, particularly its conflicts with the Underworld. Her actions consistently prioritize the protection of her students and undermining the militaristic agenda of her own kingdom, even if her true, overarching intentions remain ambiguous.
In the story, Dai-sensei serves as a powerful mentor figure and a holder of significant influence. Beyond her connection to Haruna, she has a past mentorship relationship with Chris. She also shares a mentor-like bond with Eucliwood Hellscythe, who once served as an intern under her at the Matellis academy. She is the creator of specific technologies designed to suppress or transfer overwhelming magical abilities, including a device that allows Eucliwood to temporarily relinquish her powers. Her authority is such that her decision to put the protagonist, Ayumu Aikawa, through a trial is final, and she demonstrates the power to erase his memories when he fails. Later, she gives his companions a chance to restore them, showing that she is not entirely without mercy.
Throughout the series, Dai-sensei demonstrates several notable abilities. Despite her often passive observation, her magical power is immense and inspires terror even in the underworld, with demons reacting in panic at the mere mention of her title. Her known skills include the ability to teleport small objects and utilize light as her primary elemental power. She is also capable of engineering advanced magical technology and casually performing powerful spells, such as destroying a large, out-of-control slime creature and erasing a person's memories. A quirk of her physiology is a pronounced sensitivity to carbonated drinks, which cause her to become easily inebriated, a fact other characters occasionally exploit.
