Description
Lacus Clyne is the daughter of Siegel Clyne, the former chairman of the PLANT space colonies. She is a second-generation Coordinator and later revealed to be an Accord, a special type of genetically enhanced human. Before the events of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, she was a famous singer known as PLANT’s First Songstress, whose songs carried messages of peace. In her early appearances she appears sweet and somewhat naive, but this demeanor reflects her deeply pacifist and idealistic nature rather than actual weakness.
During the first war, Lacus becomes the co-leader of the Clyne Faction and the leader of the Three Ships Alliance, a third force opposing both the Earth Alliance and ZAFT. After that war, she withdraws from public life and lives quietly with Kira Yamato at Reverend Malchio’s orphanage in the Marshall Islands. As a new conflict erupts in SEED Destiny, she is targeted by an assassination attempt but survives thanks to Kira. She later moves to Orb to stay with former comrades. While out of the spotlight, ZAFT uses an impostor, Meer Campbell, to impersonate her for political purposes. Lacus eventually re-emerges, reveals the deception, and delivers the newly built Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice mobile suits to Kira and Athrun Zala. She then leads the organization Terminal and its allies in the final battle to stop Chairman Durandal’s Destiny Plan, a scheme to assign behavioral genes to all humans to eliminate conflict.
Lacus is motivated by an unwavering desire to end war and achieve lasting peace between Coordinators and Naturals. She acts against extremism on both sides and consistently supports the crew of the Archangel and the Orb Union. Her personality is calm, composed, and intuitive; she is able to make clear strategic judgments even without formal military training. Although she never pilots a mobile suit, she commands the support warship Eternal with the aid of her trusted collaborator Andrew Waltfeld. She possesses the SEED ability, which manifests only when she is commanding in battle, sharpening her perception and decision-making. As an Accord, she also has an unconscious ability that makes others trust her and follow her lead—a trait that initially even she was unaware of.
Her most significant relationship is with Kira Yamato. They share a deep emotional bond; she is the only person to whom she shows vulnerability. She foresaw the pain war would bring him and later understood his inner conflicts, which allowed her to truly comfort and support him. Before the final battle of the first war, she gave him a ring and asked him to return safely. Earlier, she had been engaged to Athrun Zala through an arranged marriage. While they cared for each other when they first met, the engagement became purely political and was eventually dissolved without animosity. They later fight alongside each other as friends and allies. She also develops a strong friendship with Cagalli Yula Athha, Kira’s twin sister and the princess of Orb, supporting her political efforts. Her pacifist philosophy was heavily influenced by her father, Siegel Clyne, who was killed during a political purge by the Zala faction.
Throughout Gundam SEED Destiny, Lacus evolves from a retired idol into a decisive political and military leader. She emerges from hiding to confront Durandal, publicly exposes the impostor, and rallies the forces opposed to the Destiny Plan. After the war, she is invited back to the PLANTs to serve as a mediator and eventually assumes the role of chairwoman of the PLANT Supreme Council as well as the first president of COMPASS, an international peace-monitoring organization created to prevent further conflict between Coordinators and Naturals.
