Description
Conroy Haagensen is a fictional character from the anime OVA series Mobile Suit Gundam UC. He serves as the second-in-command of the Earth Federation special forces team ECOAS, Unit 920, holding the rank of Lieutenant Commander or Major. At thirty-five years old, Haagensen is characterized by his physical robustness and loyalty to his commanding officer, Daguza Mackle, whom he faithfully follows as a right-hand man.
As a career soldier, Haagensen possesses a personality that is both steadfast and professional, though he can be willing to engage in pragmatic and unscrupulous tactics to achieve mission objectives. Despite this hardened edge, he is not without a sense of camaraderie and personal conviction. Initially, he appears somewhat unassuming and even relaxed in high-pressure situations, such as when he nonchalantly speaks of retaking the Nahel Argama while smirking, or listens casually to a Neo Zeon plan in the lounge. This demeanor belies his sharp capabilities; beneath his unpretentious exterior lies a highly effective and decisive operative.
Motivated by a dutiful commitment to his mission and his men, Haagensen's role in the story evolves significantly after the death of his superior, Daguza Mackle. Following Daguza's demise during the operation at Palau, Haagensen assumes command of the ECOAS team. One of his most critical contributions occurs during a tense standoff aboard the Nahel Argama, where the ship and its crew are held hostage by the Sleeves faction. While a conflict brews, Haagensen and his team take decisive action, throwing a smoke grenade onto the bridge and rapidly retaking control of the vessel. During this operation, he shows a degree of mentorship, encouraging the young protagonist Banagher Links to not waste the life Daguza had given for him and directing him to act. His relationship with Banagher is one of begrudging respect, as he observes the young pilot's maturation and looks upon him with a sense of approval when Banagher displays a more grown-up demeanor.
As a pilot, Haagensen is notably skilled in close-quarters combat. He pilots a modified ECOAS-type Jegan, a D-type variant equipped with a unique visor unit to enhance long-range firepower, as well as a handgun and dagger knife for close encounters. During the final battle over Laplace's box, he demonstrates his talents from long range, using a mega bazooka launcher to provide support fire. When that weapon is destroyed by the mobile suit Rozen Zulu, he adapts instantly, piloting his Jegan to intercept enemy units attempting to board the Nahel Argama. In a striking display of agility and skill, he evades a Zusa with a handgun and grenade before engaging a Sturm Gallus in close-quarters combat.
Haagensen's most harrowing trial comes during the confrontation with the colossal Neo Zeong. The mobile armor possesses the ability to launch wire-guided bits that can erode and hijack enemy machines, turning them against their allies. After several of his subordinates are forced to fight each other, Haagensen uses his Jegan’s knife to deftly destroy the incoming bits. However, when he hesitates to destroy a captured ally’s machine, prioritizing saving his comrade over self-preservation, he finds himself in grave danger. This moment highlights a key aspect of his personality: a fiery, loyal heart that can override his tactical coldness. He is ultimately saved by another pilot who accepts the burden of making the hard choice. Haagensen survives the battle, and in the aftermath, he and his remaining ECOAS team help manage the ship Megalanica, requesting additional hands to help pilot the vessel.
