Description
Allelujah Haptism is a fictional character from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam 00, serving as one of the four original Gundam Meisters for the paramilitary organization Celestial Being. He is a young man of approximately 186 centimeters in height with a slender build, green hair, and heterochromatic eyes: one gray and one gold. His birthday is recorded as February 27 in the year 2288 Anno Domini.
Allelujah's background is defined by tragedy and human experimentation. He was originally an orphaned refugee from Kazakhstan who was captured and became a test subject designated E-0057 at the Human Reform League's Super Human Research Institute. There, he underwent surgical procedures to be enhanced into a super soldier, receiving quantum brainwaves intended to grant him superhuman reflexes and spatial perception. The experiments had an unintended side effect, splitting his psyche and creating a violent alternate personality he calls Hallelujah. While trying to escape from the facility alongside other test subjects, the escape pod became adrift in space with limited oxygen. In a fight for survival, the Hallelujah personality took full control and killed all the other occupants, leaving Allelujah as the sole survivor. It was after this incident that he was discovered and recruited by Celestial Being, as the supercomputer Veda had identified him as a suitable Gundam Meister.
The core of Allelujah's character is defined by his dual personality. The dominant personality, Allelujah, is a gentle, brooding, and deeply guilt-ridden individual. He hates killing and shows remorse even for enemy casualties, often hesitating in combat. This makes him ill-suited for the violent nature of his work, and he frequently questions the morality of his actions. In stark contrast, the alternate personality, Hallelujah, is ferocious, ruthless, and driven purely by a survival-of-the-fittest instinct. Hallelujah revels in destruction and feels no empathy for others, seeing them only as obstacles. He views himself as the embodiment of Allelujah's repressed desires, taking control whenever Allelujah's morals become a liability. The two personalities can be distinguished by their speech patterns and behavior, with Hallelujah's emergence often marked by a shift in his hair to reveal his gold-colored eye.
Allelujah's primary motivation evolves throughout the narrative. Initially, he is driven by a desire to atone for his past and to prevent the creation of more super soldiers like himself. He takes the initiative to destroy the facility where he was created, killing the scientists and remaining test subjects. He also becomes obsessed with the super soldier Soma Peries, as their quantum brainwaves interfere with each other, causing him intense pain. He eventually discovers that Soma Peries is in fact Marie Parfacy, the girl from the research facility who gave him his name. His motivation then shifts from wanting to defeat her to wanting to save her and restore her original memories and personality.
In his role within the story, Allelujah pilots transformable mobile suits that emphasize speed and high mobility, starting with the GN-003 Kyrios Gundam and later the GN-007 Arios Gundam. His combat performance is inconsistent, directly tied to which personality is in control. The gentle Allelujah is often hesitant and struggles against skilled opponents, while the savage Hallelujah is a highly effective killer. When the two personalities manage to synchronize their thinking and reflexes, they unlock Allelujah's true potential as a super soldier, becoming an overwhelmingly powerful pilot. After a major battle at the end of the first season, he is captured by the United Nations forces and imprisoned for four years until he is rescued by his comrades at the start of the second season.
His key relationships are central to his development. The most significant is with Marie Parfacy, also known as Soma Peries. Their shared past as test subjects and their connection through quantum brainwaves create a powerful bond, and reuniting with her and protecting her becomes his primary goal. He also has a symbiotic, if contentious, relationship with his own alternate personality, Hallelujah. While he initially fears and rejects this part of himself, he eventually learns to accept it and work in tandem with it to survive and protect what matters to him.
Allelujah undergoes significant development. He begins as a haunted and conflicted individual, paralyzed by guilt over his past. He gradually learns to accept both his own actions and the existence of Hallelujah, recognizing that his dual nature is a part of who he is. This acceptance allows him to achieve a temporary fusion of both personalities, making him whole and capable of fighting at full strength. After the final conflict, he chooses to leave Celestial Being with Marie to find a new meaning in life outside of being a soldier, though he remains available to the organization when needed.
As a super soldier, his notable abilities include enhanced physical conditioning, superhuman reflexes, and the use of quantum brainwaves. He possesses exceptional spatial awareness and piloting skill, particularly with high-speed transformable mobile suits. His most unique ability is the cooperation between his two personalities, where Allelujah handles strategic thinking and Hallelujah manages instantaneous reflexes and combat intuition, creating a dual-processor mind that can outmatch even other super soldiers.
