Description
Lockon Stratos is the codename used by two character in the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 universe, first by Neil Dylandy and later by his twin brother Lyle Dylandy. The original and primary bearer of the name, Neil Dylandy, was born in Ireland in AD 2283. When he was thirteen years old, his parents and younger sister Amy were killed in a terrorist attack carried out by the KPSA (Kurdistan Peoples Self-Government Association). This traumatic event shaped the rest of his life, instilling in him a deep hatred for terrorists and a personal desire for revenge against those responsible, particularly the mercenary Ali Al-Saachez, who was involved in the attack. Neil joined the paramilitary organization Celestial Being as a Gundam Meister, taking the codename Lockon Stratos, and was assigned to pilot the GN-002 Gundam Dynames, a mobile suit specialized for long-range sniping.
As a person, Lockon presented a laid-back, friendly, and approachable demeanor, often using humor to lighten tense situations. He was known for his charismatic and easygoing attitude, which made him well-liked among his colleagues and served as a social anchor for the team. He frequently acted as a mediator and mentor figure, particularly toward the younger and more emotionally distant Meister Setsuna F. Seiei. Beneath this cheerful exterior, however, Lockon carried a deep, simmering anger and a strong sense of personal vendetta. His past trauma could cloud his judgment, especially when missions involved terrorists or the KPSA. His core motivation was twofold: he genuinely believed in Celestial Being's mission to eradicate war, but he was also driven by a personal need for vengeance. This internal conflict between his idealistic goals and his desire for retribution defined his character arc.
Lockon's role in the story was that of the team's sniper and long-range support specialist. He provided cover fire and tactical precision during operations, often engaging targets from extreme distances with remarkable accuracy. He was the eldest of the four original Gundam Meisters and brought a stabilizing presence to the group. His role extended beyond combat; he fostered camaraderie among the Meisters and helped maintain morale on the mothership Ptolemaios.
His key relationships included a complex bond with Setsuna F. Seiei. Lockon initially saw Setsuna as a cold and distant young man but gradually took on a brotherly, mentoring role. A crucial turning point in their relationship occurred when Lockon learned that Setsuna, as a child soldier in Krugis, had been involved in the same terrorist faction responsible for his family's death. Lockon confronted Setsuna with a gun but ultimately chose not to kill him, understanding that their shared enemy was Ali Al-Saachez and that revenge was not the answer. This decision marked a significant moment of personal growth. Lockon also had a close working relationship with the tactical forecaster Sumeragi Lee Noriega, with whom he shared a warm and sometimes flirtatious rapport. He was a trusted and respected figure among the other Meisters, Tieria Erde and Allelujah Haptism. His greatest antagonism was reserved for Ali Al-Saachez, the man he held responsible for his family's murder. Lockon's relationship with his own twin brother Lyle was distant by choice, as he deliberately stayed out of Lyle's life to protect him from Celestial Being's dangers.
Lockon's development was marked by his struggle to reconcile vengeance with his duty. He suffered a severe injury during a battle, damaging his right eye, which affected his depth perception and sniping ability. Despite medical advice to rest, he chose to continue fighting, driven by his conviction and his desire to confront Ali. His notable abilities included exceptional marksmanship and a profound understanding of trajectory physics, stealth tactics, and firearms. He was also a competent strategist and pilot, capable of close-quarters combat when necessary. He operated alongside a small orange Haro unit that assisted him with mobile suit control and maintenance.
Lockon met his end during the climactic Operation Fallen Angels. In a final confrontation with Ali Al-Saachez, who was piloting a stolen Throne Gundam, Lockon fought fiercely despite his injuries and his heavily damaged Dynames. In a last act of defiance, he ejected from his mobile suit, connected his sniper module to a drifting GN Arms cannon, and fired a desperate shot. He managed to damage Ali's suit but was ultimately killed when the cannon was destroyed. His sacrifice had a profound impact on the surviving members of Celestial Being, especially Setsuna, who lost a dear friend and mentor. Lockon's legacy continued to influence the team's mission, and years later, his twin brother Lyle Dylandy accepted the codename Lockon Stratos and joined the reformed Celestial Being, piloting the successor mobile suit GN-006 Cherudim Gundam to honor his brother's memory and carry on the fight.
