Description
Pikaia is a main character in the anime Pikaia! and a tester creature created by Professor Parker for the Cambrian Project. The character is modeled on the real animal Pikaia, an early chordate that lived during the Cambrian period. In the story, Pikaia is an aquatic creature that can only survive in water, and outside of water it appears as a hologram. In the second season, the Pikaia that appears is an alternate version reconstructed from the data of the original character.

Pikaia cannot speak in ordinary words and communicates almost entirely with the call "Pikaia~". Despite this limited vocalization, it has enough intelligence to understand human language, and it expresses its emotions through changes in vocal intonation and facial expression. This makes it a responsive and expressive presence among the human characters, even though it never speaks in full sentences.

Within the story, Pikaia is closely tied to the mission of the Cambrian Project. Together with the young researchers Vince and Hana, it travels to the Cambrian-era sea in search of the Lost Code, the key to restoring a future Earth that has become uninhabitable for living creatures. Because of its design and its connection to the Cambrian world, Pikaia plays a central role in the group's exploration and in their efforts to return to the Cambrian era.

Pikaia's key relationships are with Professor Parker, who created it, and with Vince and Hana, who work alongside it during their missions. The character's role is revisited in the second season, which presents the Pikaia that appears there as an alternate version made from the original's data, giving it a different origin while continuing to function as a companion within the team.

Among its notable abilities, Pikaia can understand human language despite its limited speech, communicate through its distinctive call along with vocal inflection and facial cues, live only in aquatic environments, and appear as a hologram when outside water. These traits allow it to serve as a link between the human researchers and the Cambrian environment they explore.
