TV Special
Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII appears in the 2002 television special Lupin III: Episode 0 First Contact as a skilled and honorable samurai who is the thirteenth generation descendant of the legendary outlaw Ishikawa Goemon. In this story, which serves as a prequel depicting the first encounters among the main characters, Goemon is introduced while on a personal quest to find the Zantetsuken, a legendary sword of immense power that he considers the only blade worthy of his abilities. His search for this weapon is what ultimately draws him into the orbit of Arsène Lupin III and the others. The special is set in New York, and Goemon enters the narrative during the second half of the story, where his role and his katana quickly become central elements of the plot.

In terms of personality, Goemon is portrayed as stern, serious, and stubborn, a man of few words who lives by a strict personal code of honor. He embodies the archetype of the stoic warrior, carrying himself with intense pride in his martial skills and a deep sense of shame should he ever fail in a task. Despite his formidable and disciplined exterior, he can show moments of vulnerability, such as becoming flustered in awkward situations or showing a naïve trust in certain women. He remains deeply traditionalist in his habits, exclusively wearing Japanese clothing like a kimono and hakama, and preferring Japanese cuisine to the point of fasting rather than eating Western food. His long, unevenly cut hair is a deliberate reflection of his rejection of conventional grooming.

The role Goemon plays in First Contact is that of an initial adversary. When he first crosses paths with Lupin, Daisuke Jigen, and Fujiko Mine, they all serve as opponents who are forced into an uneasy alliance due to the circumstances surrounding the treasure they are all seeking. This treasure, which includes an indestructible metal cylinder called the Claw of Hermes, is connected to the legendary lost treasure of Goemon's own clan, giving him a personal stake in the matter. As a result, his key relationships at this point are defined by conflict and necessity. He is an adversary to Lupin, who is trying to steal the same treasure, and to Jigen, who is initially hired to protect it. The foundation of their future partnership is built not on friendship but on a mutual need to survive, with Goemon eventually joining forces with the group after recognizing their skills and determination. This special therefore depicts the very beginning of Goemon's development from a lone warrior into a member of Lupin's gang, showcasing the first steps of a bond that will be forged through shared trials.

Goemon's most notable ability, which is highlighted in First Contact, is his mastery of the legendary Zantetsuken or iron-cutting sword. This katana possesses the supernatural sharpness to cut through almost any substance, including metal, steel, vehicles, and even bullets. His skill with the blade is such that he can slice objects apart with incredible speed and precision, often sheathing the sword a moment before the severed target falls apart. His fighting style is a lifelong adherence to various classical Japanese martial arts, including kenjutsu, iaidō, and jujutsu, making him a formidable opponent even without his weapon. Despite his deadly capabilities, his code of honor generally prevents him from taking human life, and he prefers to use the Zantetsuken to destroy weapons or other inanimate objects, often lamenting his actions with his famous catchphrase about cutting something worthless. In this special, his search for the Zantetsuken and his demonstration of its power serve as the primary motivator for his actions and define his role in the story as a warrior of immense, focused skill.
