Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is the thirteenth generation of his lineage, a renegade samurai and a direct descendant of the historical figure Ishikawa Goemon. As an associate of the master thief Arsène Lupin III, he moves through a modern world of international heists and advanced technology while steadfastly adhering to the ancient codes and practices of the Japanese warrior. In the narrative of Sweet Lost Night, Goemon is first encountered during a severe Alaskan snowstorm, where he comes to the aid of a young woman named Isabelle, rescuing her from attackers who are agents of a powerful secret society known as Conquer the Universe, Inc., also referred to as the Three Masons. This initial act of protection quickly evolves into a deeper commitment, and he becomes her personal bodyguard as she pursues a legendary diamond called the Super Egg.

Goemon’s personality is defined by a profound sense of stoicism and a strict moral code that guides his every action. He is typically reserved and composed, often seen in a state of deep meditation even when danger is imminent, a practice that underscores his discipline and focused mind. His pride in his abilities as a swordsman is immense, and any failure, such as the breakage of his sword or succumbing to a personal weakness, leads to extreme feelings of shame and remorse, often driving him to depart on solitary journeys of training and self-reflection. Despite his aloof exterior, he possesses a strong sense of loyalty and a particular softness for those he perceives as vulnerable. This is most evident in his relationship with Isabelle; he develops romantic feelings for her, and his emotional attachment breaks through his usual stoic demeanor, leading to moments of visible frustration and profound determination. One of his notable motivations is the protection of innocents, especially children, a drive so potent that it overrides his logic and caution.

Within the group, Goemon maintains distinct relationships. While loyal to Lupin, he is frequently irritated by his leader's womanizing and reckless antics, though he is always ready to assist in serious situations. His bond with Daisuke Jigen is one of mutual respect and silent camaraderie, viewing the gunman as a fellow honorable warrior. His trust in Fujiko Mine is considerably lower, as he is wary of her manipulative and exploitative nature, yet he may still aid her when their goals align. The events of Sweet Lost Night serve as a significant moment of development, forcing an intense emotional response that is rare for him. Ultimately, when Isabelle betrays the group and is mortally wounded, Goemon’s response is not one of vengeance against her, but a decisive and symbolic act of severing ties with the object of their quest: he destroys the Super Egg diamond itself with his blade, demonstrating that his emotional depth and principles outweigh worldly treasures or logical objectives. Following this climax, he departs once more for Alaska, continuing his established pattern of seeking solitude in the aftermath of life-altering experiences.

His most notable ability is his peerless mastery of the sword, specifically with his legendary weapon, the Zantetsuken, a blade said to be capable of cutting through virtually any material. This skill is not merely brute force but a refined art of Iaidō, allowing him to perform feats such as slicing a helicopter cleanly in half during a confrontation. His martial prowess extends to unarmed combat, including disciplines like karate and jujutsu, and he possesses near-superhuman speed and precision. Beyond his combat skills, Goemon is a traditionalist to his core; he exclusively wears traditional Japanese clothing, prefers Japanese cuisine above all else, and adheres to Buddhist and Shinto beliefs, often partaking in rituals with sake. While he is a capable driver and pilot, he prefers to be a passenger, and despite his distaste for modern technology, he can use it when absolutely necessary. His most defining limitation is his strict code of honor, which forbids him from taking a human life except in a duel against a dishonorable opponent, forcing him to lament any target he deems unworthy of his blade.
