OVA
Description
Efreeta, also known as the Demon God Ifurita, originates as an ancient weapon created by the lost prior civilization of the world of El-Hazard. She is a biological machine or combat android designed with the appearance of a beautiful young woman, possessing long purple hair in her original OVA design. Her construction as a weapon of immense power places her among entities known as "Gods" or "Demons," created specifically to counter the power of the royal family and wield nuclear-class destructive capabilities.

The defining feature of Efreeta's operational mechanics is a large wind-up key inserted into her back. The act of winding this key activates her and establishes the person who performed the winding as her master, to whom she is bound by an absolute obedience circuit. This key also serves as the staff weapon she carries.

Efreeta's personality differs notably between adaptations. In the original OVA series, she is depicted as a cool, ruthless, and emotionless being when first awakened. She obediently and dispassionately carries out the destructive orders of her master, capable of obliterating entire cities in a single surprise attack. However, this cold exterior conceals a dormant heart. When Makoto Mizuhara, the protagonist who possesses the ability to interface with ancient technology, disables her obedience circuit, her frozen emotions begin to thaw. She develops genuine affection and love for Makoto, moving from a weapon of destruction to a being capable of emotion and self-sacrifice. Her motivations become centered on protecting Makoto and fulfilling her own desire to be more than a mere tool of war.

In contrast, the television version presents her as a clumsy, airheaded, and charmingly foolish character whose failures often lead to comedic situations. This personality shift is humorously explained as being due to a screw being loose literally, and when the screw is fixed, she briefly reverts to her serious OVA personality before returning to her usual self. Even in this lighter portrayal, she demonstrates her immense power by destroying a mountain as a warning.

Efreeta's central role in the OVA story begins before the main narrative, as she first appears in a high school basement on Earth, warmly greeting Makoto as if she knows him before sending him and several others to the world of El-Hazard. Later, on the Island of the Demon God in El-Hazard, she is discovered still sleeping after centuries. The antagonist, Jinnai, awakens her using the Power Key Staff, and because he winds her key, she becomes bound to serve him emotionlessly. She acts as a formidable enemy until Makoto, using his unique power, disables her obedience circuit, freeing her from Jinnai's control and winning her loyalty and love. In the climax, when the super-weapon known as the Eye of God goes out of control, she sacrifices herself, using her power and Makoto's abilities to stop it, and is hurled back through time and space to ancient Earth.

Her key relationships are with Makoto and Jinnai. With Jinnai, she has a purely master-servant dynamic, following his orders without question or malice. Her relationship with Makoto is the emotional core of her character. Her development from an unfeeling weapon to a loving individual is driven by her interactions with him, creating a bond that transcends time. After being thrown into the past, she enters a ten-thousand-year sleep, dreaming of Makoto and holding onto the memories he gave her. She awakens at the appointed time, meets a younger Makoto, and sends him to El-Hazard, creating the loop that allows their destinies to intertwine once more. As a testament to her enduring love, she learns the ability to travel between dimensions.

In terms of abilities, Efreeta is one of the most powerful entities in her world. Her primary capability is immense destructive power, enough to level cities or mountains with a single attack. She also possesses perfect knowledge of all ancient techniques, allowing her to duplicate any attack or spell used against her in combat. Her advanced combat analysis system makes her a nearly invincible opponent, as she can counter any strategy or power demonstrated before her.
