Description
Arashi Kishyuu is one of the seven Dragons of Heaven, a group of warriors destined to protect the fate of the Earth in the final battle of 1999. She is known as the Hidden Shrine Maiden of the Ise Shrine, a sacred role that means she carries the shrine's most powerful treasure sealed within her body.

Arashi's past is marked by profound loss. Her mother, a shrine maiden who fled Ise to protect her unborn child from its destiny, died when Arashi was seven years old. Left alone and living on the streets, Arashi survived by eating garbage for three months, unsure if her solitary life was worth continuing. She was discovered outside the Ise Shrine by the chief priestess, Kaede, who convinced the desolate child to live by telling her that she would be sad if Arashi died and that the girl would one day meet people who would care for her. This traumatic beginning forged Arashi's most defining personality trait: a stoic, serene, and outwardly cold demeanor that rarely breaks. She is not good at socializing and often appears irritated or distant, a mask that hides a genuinely kind heart and a tragic sense of her own fate.

As the Hidden Shrine Maiden, Arashi conceals all the power of the Ise Shrine in her body. Her most notable ability is summoning a massive, sacred sword that emerges directly from her left hand. This weapon is the shrine's greatest treasure and makes her a formidable fighter. She also has the ability to detect shikis, powerful spells that take human form, and can create a pyramid-shaped barrier field known as a kekkai.

In the story, Arashi is summoned to Tokyo by the prophetic dream-seer Hinoto to help protect Kamui, the central figure in the battle for Earth's future. Her key relationship is with Sorata Arisugawa, a monk who, almost upon seeing her, declares that she is the woman for whom he is destined to die. Initially, Arashi is annoyed by his relentless flirtations and treats him with cool indifference. However, over time, Sorata's unwavering devotion and the prophecy of his death begin to affect her, and she gradually falls in love with him, though she continues to struggle with expressing her emotions. Arashi is also deeply connected to Hinoto, acting as the Dragon of Heaven most directly in touch with her, and she shares a mother-daughter-like bond with Kaede, the chief priestess who raised her at Ise.

Arashi's motivations are heavily tied to her duty and her relationships. Initially driven by her obligation as a Dragon of Heaven, she later becomes consumed by the desire to prevent Sorata from dying to protect her. Her development is most clearly seen in her evolving feelings for Sorata, transforming from cold rejection to a deep, if quietly expressed, love. This relationship has significant consequences for her power. In the manga, after she and Sorata consummate their love, she loses the ability to summon her sacred sword, just as her mother did before her. This loss leads to her being trapped in a dream world by Hinoto's dark half, intended to turn her into a Dragon of Earth.

The outcomes for Arashi differ across adaptations. In the anime television series, she switches sides to the Dragons of Earth, believing that killing Kamui will release Sorata from his fatal vow. This choice instead leads to a confrontation where Sorata dies protecting her, and she ultimately survives, visiting his childhood home to honor his memory. In the 1996 film adaptation, she is killed by the primary antagonist, Fuuma, while mourning Sorata's death. The character also appears in CLAMP's later series Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, where she is depicted as married to Sorata, running a lodging house, and having survived the apocalyptic battle.
