Description
Hinoto, also known as the Dreamseer, is a character who appears in the manga and anime series X. Despite her youthful and fragile appearance as a small, doll-like figure with long white hair, she is a woman of advanced age, having lived for centuries. Her physical form is severely limited: she is naturally blind, deaf, and mute, and she is unable to move on her own. As a result, she relies entirely on telepathy to communicate with others and is constantly attended by her servants, who tend to her needs in her residence deep beneath the National Diet Building of Japan.

Hinoto possesses the profound ability known as dreamseeing, which allows her to perceive the future through her dreams. These visions have never been known to be wrong, making her a valuable asset to the Japanese government, which she advises. However, this power came at the cost of her physical senses. Her role in the coming apocalypse is to foresee the battle between the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth and to guide the chosen ones, particularly the young Kamui, to their destinies.

The core of her personality is not as simple as it appears. While she presents herself as a benevolent leader of the Dragons of Heaven, wishing to protect humanity from the world's destruction, her mind is the site of a devastating internal conflict. After centuries of witnessing horrific nightmares become reality, a dark entity formed from her own repressed fears, pride, and negative emotions emerged. This entity, often referred to as her "dark half," lives within her dreamscape and seeks to take full control of her body, desiring to allow the world to end as originally foreseen. Her primary motivation becomes a desperate struggle for survival and control, not only against the external forces of the apocalypse but also against the growing influence of this inner self. She fears a prophecy that foretells Kamui is the one who will eventually kill her, a fate her dark half is determined to prevent.

Her key relationships are deeply intertwined with her dual nature. Her younger sister, Kanoe, is the leader of the opposing Dragons of Earth. While they work against each other in the mortal world, their connection is a point of profound tragedy. Hinoto's mental deterioration leads to a confrontation where her dark half kills Kanoe, who had entered her dreams in an attempt to save her. She also forms significant bonds with the warriors she assembles. The monk Sorata and the onmyouji Arashi are among her most loyal followers, though her dark half later traps Arashi in a dream prison to erase her memories and turn her into an enemy. Her servant, a man named Daisuke Saiki, is devoted to her, while other characters like Seiichiro Aoki's nephew and the dreamseer Kakyo, who serves the Dragons of Earth, are also aware of her plight.

Her character development is marked by a progressive loss of agency. As the story unfolds, the gentle Hinoto is increasingly imprisoned within her own dreams by her powerful dark half, which takes control of her physical form and manipulates events from the shadows. This internal corruption leads her to betray her allies, feeding them false information and even attacking Kamui with shikigami, or spiritual familiars. The outcome of her struggle varies across different adaptations. In the television anime series, the good Hinoto ultimately sacrifices herself, committing suicide within the dreamscape to destroy her dark half and free herself. In the theatrical film, she dies while holding her sister Kanoe in her arms as the building collapses around them. In the original manga, the story remains unresolved, with her dark half having seemingly taken full control while the true Hinoto remains trapped.

Beyond her primary power of prophetic dreams, Hinoto has several notable abilities. She can teleport people across distances, create shikigami to attack or spy on others, and enter the dreams of other individuals to communicate with them or alter their perceptions. She is also associated with the symbolism of the Papess tarot card, representing wisdom, intuition, and hidden knowledge.
