Description
Garlic Jr. is a fictional antagonist from the Dragon Ball Z anime, serving as the primary villain in the film Dead Zone and later in a self-titled story arc that takes place after the Frieza Saga. He is an anime-original character created by Toei Animation and does not appear in Akira Toriyama’s original manga.

Garlic Jr. is a diminutive, blue-skinned humanoid with pointed ears, fangs, and white eyes with small black pupils, which can sometimes glow red to emphasize his demonic nature. He dresses in a large white hooded robe over a black cassock adorned with a gold castle emblem. When he transforms, his clothes are destroyed, leaving him in only his pants and shoes as his body grows to a massive, muscular size with darker teal skin. His appearance and voice bear a strong resemblance to the earlier Dragon Ball villain Emperor Pilaf, though Garlic Jr. is portrayed as far more serious and sadistic.

The character is driven by a deep-seated resentment and a thirst for revenge against Kami, the guardian of Earth. In ages past, Kami defeated Garlic Jr.’s father, who was also named Garlic, for the position of Earth’s guardian. The previous guardian saw the evil in the elder Garlic’s heart and chose Kami instead, leading Garlic to launch a failed rebellion. He was subsequently imprisoned in a void called the Dead Zone, where he eventually died. Garlic Jr. inherited his father’s grudge and seeks to settle this old score by killing Kami and conquering the universe.

Garlic Jr. is characterized by his immense arrogance and overconfidence, a trait only amplified after he successfully uses the Dragon Balls to wish for immortality. Believing himself to be truly invincible, he is ruthless and cruel, yet also cunning and intelligent enough to lead his own group of demon henchmen. He admires his father and originally planned to not only avenge him but also revive him to rule together, showing that his motivation is rooted in family loyalty as well as ambition. Despite his intelligence, he has a critical flaw in that he does not learn from his mistakes, most notably failing twice when he opens his own Dead Zone attack against his enemies.

In his first appearance in the film Dead Zone, Garlic Jr. and his minions, Nikki, Ginger, and Sansho, gather the seven Dragon Balls, kidnapping a young Gohan in the process to obtain the four-star ball on his hat. Upon summoning Shenron, Garlic Jr. wishes for and is granted eternal life, making him unkillable. He then confronts Goku and Kami to settle his grudge. When faced with Goku and Piccolo simultaneously, he transforms into his giant, more powerful second form. Unable to be killed, he opens the Dead Zone to banish his enemies. However, Gohan’s latent power erupts in a fit of rage, and the young half-Saiyan overwhelms Garlic Jr., knocking him into his own vortex where he is seemingly trapped forever.

He later escapes this imprisonment during a filler arc in the Dragon Ball Z anime. A rogue planet called the Makyo Star, which is the source of his power, approaches Earth, granting him the strength to break free from the Dead Zone. Now free, he and a new team of henchmen known as the Spice Boys, consisting of Spice, Vinegar, Mustard, and Salt, take over Kami’s Lookout. Garlic Jr. traps Kami and Mr. Popo in sealed glass bottles and unleashes a substance called the Black Water Mist upon the Earth. This mist turns anyone who breathes it into mindless, vampire-like demon slaves under his control. Only Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo are able to resist its effects, and they storm the Lookout to stop him. During the battle, Gohan kills Mustard and Salt, while Piccolo, who was secretly immune to the mist, pretends to be enslaved in order to free Kami and Mr. Popo. Kami then uses the Sacred Water to reverse the mist’s effects on the planet’s population. Enraged, Garlic Jr. transforms again and reopens the Dead Zone. However, Gohan destroys the Makyo Star, which drains Garlic Jr. of his power and leaves him emaciated and helpless. Once again, he is sucked into the Dead Zone, this time with no hope of return.

Garlic Jr. possesses several notable abilities. His most defining trait is his immortality, which he retains after his wish, allowing him to survive any attack and instantly regenerate from wounds. He can fly and manipulate ki to fire energy blasts. As a Makyan, he has the ability to increase his size and power dramatically through a process known as Gigantification, though this form can initially reduce his speed. He is one of the few characters capable of using magic materialization to create objects. His signature technique is the Dead Zone, a powerful attack that opens a portal to a void-like pocket dimension, which he can use to banish his enemies. During his second appearance, he also utilizes the Sealed Light Beam, which paralyzes and shrinks his opponents into small, contained spheres. Furthermore, his power is directly amplified by the Makyo Star; the closer it comes to Earth, the stronger he becomes.
