Description
Kami Sama is a fictional character who appears in the anime film Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone. In the context of the Dragon Ball series, Kami is the Namekian who serves as the Guardian of the Earth, having held this position for several hundred years. His name, Kami Sama, directly translates to God, reflecting his divine role as the planet's protector and the creator of the Earth's Dragon Balls. He is recognizable by his aged, wise appearance, typical of his species, characterized by wrinkled green skin. He usually wears a white robe with a blue collar and a red kanji symbol on his chest that means God.
His origin is tied to a single nameless Namekian who arrived on Earth as a child. To become the Guardian, this Namekian was required to be pure of heart, so he expelled all the evil from within himself. This process created his good half, who became Kami, and his evil half, who became the demon king known as Piccolo. Because they were originally the same being, Kami and Piccolo share a mystical life link, meaning that if one dies, the other will also perish.
In his role as Guardian, Kami is generally a reserved and secluded figure, preferring to watch over the planet from his palace high in the clouds, the Lookout, alongside his faithful attendant Mr. Popo. He has a complex personality, carrying a deep sense of responsibility and, at times, regret. He feels unworthy of his title because his own past evil created a great threat to the world in the form of King Piccolo and his successor, Piccolo. Despite this, he genuinely cares for the Earth and its people, though centuries of observing humanity have made him somewhat distant and distrustful. He values martial arts ability but ultimately prefers wisdom and strategy over direct combat, choosing to leave the fighting to younger, stronger protectors unless the situation is dire.
Kami Sama plays a crucial role in the events of Dead Zone. At the beginning of the film, he is on the Lookout when he senses that Piccolo has been attacked. Weakened by this assault on his other half, Kami initially does not know who the attacker is, though he soon realizes it is Garlic Jr. His personal history with Garlic Jr. forms the core of the film's backstory. Kami reveals to Goku that he competed against Garlic, the villain's father, for the position of Guardian of Earth hundreds of years prior. The previous Guardian saw the evil in Garlic's heart and chose Kami instead, leading to a violent confrontation where Garlic was eventually sealed away. After his defeat, Garlic swore that his son would have his revenge in three hundred years. Kami admits he never believed that Garlic would pass on his grudge to his son, which is why the appearance of Garlic Jr. catches him off guard.
When Kami confronts Garlic Jr., his primary motivation is to stop the villain's revenge and prevent him from causing further harm to the Earth. Their confrontation is directly tied to the past, as Garlic Jr. states that his father should have been Guardian and seeks to avenge his family's honor. During their fight, Kami learns that Garlic Jr. has used the Dragon Balls to wish for immortality, but Kami dismisses him as a fool for doing so. Despite his age and power, Kami is outmatched by the immortal Garlic Jr. In a desperate final act, Kami attempts to use a self-destruction technique to destroy his enemy, knowing that it would cost him his own life but also very likely kill Piccolo, who is tied to his existence. However, he is prevented from doing so by the timely intervention of Goku and Piccolo. After Garlic Jr. opens the Dead Zone, a dimension of void, in an attempt to trap everyone, Kami is nearly pulled in but is saved when the young Gohan uses his hidden power to push Garlic Jr. into the portal instead. Throughout the film, Kami’s key relationships are with his attendant Mr. Popo, with Piccolo whose life is linked to his own, and with the heroes Goku and Gohan, whose courage helps save him. He also shares a notable rivalry with Garlic and, by extension, his son Garlic Jr.
In terms of abilities shown in Dead Zone, Kami displays several techniques. He can fire energy beams from his eyes as an offensive attack. He also performs an Explosive Wave, a burst of ki from his body to repel an opponent. Most drastically, he attempts to use Self Destruction in a final bid to destroy Garlic Jr., showcasing his willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good. As the Guardian of Earth, he also possesses the inherent ability to sense events happening on the planet and communicate telepathically over vast distances.
