TV-Series
Description
Alan Gabriel is a major antagonist introduced in the second season of the series. He is a cyborg, a human who has been augmented with mechanical parts, a fact that becomes evident through his abilities and his ultimate fate. His appearance is distinctive and theatrical, often wearing a vertically striped suit and a fedora, which, combined with his unnaturally thin build, red lips, and black bands around his eyes, gives him a mime-like or sinister performer’s visage. His most prominent cybernetic feature is his right hand, which can be reconfigured to function as a powerful drill or a blade for both combat and torture.
Gabriel possesses a profoundly sadistic and cruel personality, taking genuine pleasure in destruction and the suffering of others. He is portrayed as an eccentric psychopath with a particular loathing for androids, and he has a gruesome hobby of dismantling them while they are still fully functional. This violent disposition is the primary engine for his motivations; his loyalty is not to any person or cause but to his own violent desires. He consistently aligns himself with whichever party can provide him with the greatest opportunity to kill, destroy, and engage in conflict. He is a thrill-seeking terrorist and a serial killer who treats extreme violence as a form of entertainment.
In the story, Alan Gabriel initially appears as the new assistant to Alex Rosewater, the ruler of Paradigm Corporation, having replaced Angel in that role. However, this is a cover for his true function as a spy and agent for the Union, a rival organization, where his designation is Agent 271. His role is to act as a double agent, moving between the two powerful factions of Paradigm City and the Union, but his ultimate goal is to betray both for the sake of chaos. He is a key operative who carries out assassinations, steals memory discs crucial for operating megadeuses (giant robots), and leads attacks on the protagonist's allies. He is directly responsible for brutally attacking the android R. Dorothy Wayneright on multiple occasions, not just on orders, but to inflict psychological torment on her protector, Roger Smith.
His key relationships are defined by mutual exploitation. He works for Alex Rosewater, who uses him as a tool to obtain the megadeus Big Fau, while Gabriel uses Rosewater for access to power and weaponry. He is acquainted with Angel, his predecessor, as they both hail from the Union, but their relationship is hostile and fraught with tension. His primary adversarial relationship is with the protagonist, Roger Smith, the negotiator and pilot of Big O. Gabriel’s actions are consistently aimed at provoking and destroying Roger, driven by a personal vendetta to humiliate and kill him.
Alan Gabriel undergoes a significant development as he abandons any pretense of serving a faction. After assisting Alex Rosewater in destroying the Union cells in Paradigm City, he is rewarded with the megadeus Big Duo Inferno. To pilot this machine, he takes the extreme step of physically hardwiring his own nervous system directly into the megadeus’s controls, effectively fusing his body with the machine and sacrificing what remains of his humanity. He becomes the "Dominus" of Big Duo by force, describing the experience as the best he has felt since he gave up on being fully human. In his final confrontation, his reckless and aggressive piloting pushes Roger to the limit, but the incomplete Big Duo ultimately rejects him as an unworthy pilot. The megadeus turns on him, its cockpit cables entangling and crushing him to death while delivering the judgment "ye guilty," a grim reversal of the usual activation phrase "ye not guilty".
Notable abilities beyond his piloting skills include his cybernetic enhancements. His mechanical right arm can transform into a drill or blade for close-quarters combat. He also utilizes other gadgets, such as a retractable arm for grabbing objects from a distance and a grappling wire for mobility. As a trained agent, he is proficient with firearms, often using golden pistols, and is a capable hand-to-hand fighter, able to hold his own against Roger Smith. His willingness to abandon his human form to directly interface with a megadeus represents his ultimate ability and, ultimately, his undoing.
