Description
R. Dorothy Wayneright is an android and the assistant of the negotiator Roger Smith in The Big O. She first appears under the name Dorothy Soldano, introduced as the daughter of the wealthy scientist Miguel Soldano. It is later revealed that she is not human but an android constructed by Soldano, modeled after the real Dorothy Wayneright, the daughter of Timothy Wayneright, the man who commissioned her creation. Timothy Wayneright is therefore described as her true father; he had her built in the image of his own daughter, who was apparently killed in the chaos of the event known as the Amnesia. She was constructed using Timothy Wayneright's memories as blueprints, and Soldano funded the project on the condition that Wayneright also build a Megadeus, a giant machine that was eventually stolen by the criminal Jason Beck and destroyed during Roger's confrontations. Both Soldano and Wayneright die in the course of these events, leaving Dorothy without a place to call home. Out of gratitude to Roger, and as a form of payment for his help, she decides to move into his household, where she assists the butler Norman with daily chores. Within the world of the series, the letter R in her name functions as a title applied to androids that interact with people.
As an android, Dorothy is presented as unable to feel human emotions in the ordinary sense. She speaks plainly, often bluntly, and delivers observations that remain uninfluenced by emotion and personal bias, which is one reason Roger frequently asks for her opinion on difficult subjects. Her demeanor is stoic and analytical, and she is highly intelligent, able to process information at great speed and approach problems with clear logic. Yet the series also shows that she possesses the capacity to experience emotion, including affection and love, even if she does not express those feelings the way a human would. Over time she grows closer to Roger and Norman and comes to genuinely appreciate their company and companionship. She is curious about the world and about human beings, and she forms a habit of playing a fast Chopin piece when Roger oversleeps, a routine Roger describes as an irritating way to start his day. She also has a fondness for cats.
In the story, Dorothy's role is that of Roger's live-in assistant, companion, and occasional partner in the dangerous situations that arise in Paradigm City. She handles household duties, supports Roger during his work, and frequently becomes involved in action-based conflicts. Her past remains partly mysterious, and the truth about her origins is uncovered gradually as the story progresses. A mysterious android assassin who resembles her appears later in the series, raising further questions about the role of androids before the Amnesia and the source of the memories used to create her.
Her key relationships are with Roger, whose home she joins and whom she serves faithfully; with Norman, the household butler, whom she helps and grows close to; and with her creator figures, Timothy Wayneright and Miguel Soldano, who shaped her existence. Her connection to the original Dorothy Wayneright, whose appearance she shares, is central to her identity.
Notable abilities include superhuman physical capability, rapid information processing, and a highly developed analytical intelligence that makes her an effective aid in investigations and conflicts. Her emotional development is a central part of her character, as she moves from a largely detached machine toward a figure capable of forming meaningful bonds and showing genuine care for the people around her.
