Description
Beck Gold, whose first name is revealed to be Jason, is a recurring antagonist in The Big O. He is introduced in the very first episode as the kidnapper of R. Dorothy Wayneright, setting the stage for his ongoing conflict with the series' protagonist, Roger Smith. Beck is a highly distinctive figure, immediately recognizable by his flamboyant appearance. He almost always wears a bright golden yellow suit, complemented by his signature comb which he keeps tucked in his breast pocket, a tool he frequently uses to groom his blonde hair. His penchant for self-promotion extends to naming his possessions after himself, such as his various mechs, and adorning them with a large golden B.

In terms of personality, Beck is an eccentric and outlandish jester. He approaches nearly every situation with a jovial, maniacal, and overly sarcastic demeanor. Even when his plans fail, he maintains a theatrical flair, laughing and taunting his enemies. He is extremely vain, constantly complimenting his own attire and achievements while obsessively combing his hair. Beck holds a deep and persistent grudge against Roger Smith, whom he mockingly refers to as Crow-boy due to Roger's preference for wearing black. This hatred stems from being humiliated by Roger during the initial kidnapping case. While his schemes start as sinister and dangerous, they progressively degrade into almost comical plots, yet his determination to humiliate Roger in return never wavers. Despite this buffoonish exterior, Beck possesses a sharp and uncertain intelligence, capable of shifting from panic to calm calculation in an instant.

Beck's primary motivation appears to be a blend of personal vendetta and a desire for wealth and recognition. He will do almost anything for money, including kidnapping, grand larceny, and sabotage. However, his fixation on Roger quickly becomes his driving force, with his plans continually designed to embarrass and defeat his rival. There is a deeper, more mysterious layer to his character, as he seems to possess unusual memories regarding the Megadeus, the giant relics from Paradigm City's past. He states that the memories of the Megadeus make him feel unpleasant, hinting at a personal stake in erasing them.

Throughout the story, Beck serves as a persistent thorn in Roger Smith's side, an uninvited guest who constantly forces the professional negotiator into physical confrontations. His role in the narrative evolves from a simple kidnapper to a recurring comedic nuisance, and finally to an unwilling pawn in a larger conspiracy. He becomes an agent for the powerful Alex Rosewater after being threatened with execution by Alan Gabriel. Although he successfully attacks Roger in this capacity and receives a considerable reward, he is deeply unhappy with being controlled. This dissatisfaction culminates in his betrayal of Rosewater; in the final episode, he provides Dorothy with the crucial information needed to activate Big O's Final Stage, aiding Roger in the climactic confrontation.

Beck's key relationships are defined by his rivalry with Roger Smith. While Roger considers him a small-time crook and never a major threat, Beck sees Roger as the sole obstacle to his success. He also has a manipulative relationship with Dorothy, frequently kidnapping her or attempting to use her android systems as the core for his machines. He is always seen commanding two unnamed henchmen who assist in his elaborate schemes. His relationship with Alex Rosewater is one of forced servitude, which he ultimately rebels against.

Beck demonstrates notable development over the course of the series. While he begins as a seemingly straightforward villain, his persistence and the increasingly desperate and absurd nature of his plans add a layer of tragicomedy to his character. His final act of betrayal and assistance to Roger suggests a complexity beyond simple villainy, possibly indicating that his desire to disrupt the status quo and erase the memories of the Megadeus outweighs his personal grudge. His development hints that he may be aware of the cyclical or performative nature of the world around him and actively seeks to break it, even if it means helping his greatest enemy.

Beck's most notable abilities are his extraordinary mechanical inclination and intelligence. He is a self-taught genius in robotics and engineering. He is capable of designing, constructing, and piloting his own Megadeus from scratch. He has also demonstrated the ability to hotwire and repurpose R. Dorothy Wayneright, using her as a power circuit to control other machines. His skills extend to creating precise replicas of human anatomy, such as a working model of Roger's torso and head, and even disabling sophisticated security systems with crude tools. His mechanical prowess is so respected that Alex Rosewater specifically sought him out to reconfigure the powerful Big Fau. Despite his advanced designs, his inventions often have a critical design flaw, leading to their dramatic and humiliating failure.
