Description
Major Dan Dastun is a supporting character in the anime The Big O, serving as the chief of the Paradigm City Military Police. A middle-aged man with a weathered face, graying hair, and a perpetually stern expression, he dresses in a standard-issue military uniform that reflects his no-nonsense attitude. His background is rooted in the chaotic period following the Event, a mysterious occurrence forty years before the series’ present that erased the memories of all citizens of Paradigm City. Dastun, like everyone else, has no memory of his life before that time, but he has built a new identity around order, duty, and the protection of the city’s fragile stability.

Personality-wise, Dastun is pragmatic, gruff, and deeply committed to the law. He often appears frustrated or suspicious, particularly of unorthodox individuals like Roger Smith, the city’s Negotiator and pilot of the giant robot Big O. Despite this friction, Dastun respects Roger’s effectiveness, even as he disapproves of his freelance methods. Dastun is not corrupt or power-hungry; he genuinely believes that a functioning society requires rules and that the military police must enforce them to prevent Paradigm City from descending into anarchy. He is also prone to moments of dry sarcasm and wears his exhaustion with the city’s endless crises on his sleeve.

Dastun’s primary motivation is the preservation of public safety and the rule of law in a world where memories—and thus history, identity, and trust—are absent. He fears that without a strong central authority, the city would collapse into warlordism or be overtaken by criminal syndicates and memory-manipulating schemers. His role in the story is that of the city’s official protector, often clashing with criminals, rogue megadeuses (giant robots), and enigmatic figures such as the Union and Schwarzwald. While Roger Smith operates outside the system to solve deeper mysteries, Dastun holds the front line, ordering his police units into dangerous situations and piloting a smaller police megadeus known as the Archtype.

Key relationships define much of his character arc. His interaction with Roger Smith is the most significant: initially adversarial, with Dastun viewing Roger as a reckless vigilante, it gradually evolves into a grudging partnership. Dastun comes to rely on Roger’s unique skills and Big O’s power, even as he officially denies their alliance. He also has a protective dynamic with the android Dorothy Wayneright, often showing concern for her safety despite his general stoicism. Another important relationship is with Commissioner Gordon Rosewater, his superior; Dastun follows orders but becomes increasingly wary of the Commissioner’s secretive and morally ambiguous plans. Over the course of the series, Dastun is forced to confront the limits of his purely lawful approach, especially when the city’s own government hides dark secrets about the Event and the nature of reality itself.

Development in the series sees Dastun moving from a rigid enforcer to a more flexible and introspective leader. He begins to question whether maintaining order at all costs is the same as true justice. By the second season, his trust in institutional authority erodes, and he aligns more openly with Roger to uncover the truth about Paradigm City’s manufactured existence. His loyalty shifts from blind duty to a conscious choice to protect the people over the system.

Notable abilities include his tactical command skills, marksmanship, and experience in operating the Archtype, a police megadeus smaller and less powerful than Big O but still formidable against conventional threats. He is also a capable hand-to-hand combatant and a resilient leader under fire. While he lacks Roger’s negotiation finesse or Dorothy’s computational precision, Dastun’s greatest asset is his unyielding will to maintain civilization in the face of forgetting.
