Description
Masami Saotome is a student at Shinyo Academy who initially appears to be a normal, well-liked teenager but conceals a deeply disturbed inner world. Beneath his composed and charismatic exterior, he harbors an intense hatred for all living things, including himself. He describes himself as an "indirect suicide fetishist," meaning he is driven by a subconscious, powerful desire to be killed by something stronger than him. Each time he narrowly escapes death, he reacts with disappointment rather than relief.
His motivations are rooted in this longing for annihilation, which shapes nearly every decision he makes. He forms an alliance with the Manticore, a synthetic life form created by the Towa Organization, not out of loyalty but because he sees her as a means to fulfill his death wish. Together, they engineer a series of murders and disappearances at the school, with Masami using his charm and intelligence to cover their tracks. He views the Manticore as a superior being and refers to her as his "goddess," yet his relationship with her is ultimately one of mutual exploitation. When Boogiepop intervenes and the Manticore is destroyed by Echoes' light, Masami chooses to end his own life by flying into the pillar of light, finally achieving the destruction he sought.
