Description
Boogiepop Phantom is the titular central character of the anime series Boogiepop Phantom, serving as a distinct entity separate from the original Boogiepop. This being is not a human with a secret identity but rather a Phantom, an entity born from the electromagnetic field that was created when the alien Echoes transformed into a pillar of light. In the moment of the original Manticore's death, its fear of Boogiepop, combined with Echoes' discharge of information, led to the Phantom's reconstruction. However, because the Manticore could not see Boogiepop's face clearly in the darkness at that time, the newly formed Phantom had no information regarding that visage and instead randomly adopted the appearance of Minako Yurihara, the form the Manticore had been using.

In terms of physical appearance, Boogiepop Phantom takes on the look of a tall young woman with long black hair and yellow eyes. It wears a costume that mimics the original Boogiepop's signature outfit but in darker tones, consisting of a black mantle and a tall black hat wrapped in chains, along with black shoes that have multiple belts around the ankles. This appearance is a direct consequence of its origin, as it had to construct a form from the limited information available within the scattered memories of that night.

The personality of Boogiepop Phantom is one of deep mystery and an almost unsettling calm. It possesses a demeanor similar to the original Boogiepop but shows far fewer signs of human emotion, acting in a perpetually incongruously serene manner. This entity displays no inherent hostility toward regular humans and never harms them, though it will resist actions that threaten its immediate survival, such as disabling devices that cause electromagnetic interference. It also shows a form of indifferent cruelty, as seen in its interaction with the character Misuzu Arito, telling her she is not worth being taken by it. Unlike many beings, the Phantom has no attachment to its own existence and does not intend to continue living beyond the natural dispersion of the electromagnetic field that sustains it, which is predicted to last only about a year.

The primary motivation of Boogiepop Phantom is to undertake the same objective as the real Boogiepop: stopping the MPLS, or evolved humans whose powers threaten human society. However, the Phantom employs a notably different method. Instead of eliminating these threats, it seals them away by putting them into a form of cold sleep, trapping them within a cocoon beneath the town. The Phantom explains that although their bodies no longer function, their nerves extend across the city, allowing them to keep dreaming until the rest of humanity evolves enough to catch up to them. This protective goal defines its role in the story, as it moves through the city confronting those whose powers have made them dangerous or unstable.

Regarding key relationships, Boogiepop Phantom shows no hostility toward the original Boogiepop and instead cooperates with him. It assists the original in cornering and attempting to kill Manaka Kisaragi and later leads him to the sleeping MPLS it has hidden away. The Phantom also interacts with Nagi Kirima, a vigilante who investigates supernatural events, though the Phantom resists her attempts to interfere with its work, such as by disabling her electromagnetic devices. It claims to be Boogiepop initially but later renames itself Boogiepop Phantom out of respect for the original.

In terms of character development, the Phantom remains largely static, as befits its nature as a temporary, semi-corporeal phenomenon. It shows no inherent attachment to its existence and accepts its eventual dispersion as natural. Its lack of emotional growth or change underscores its role as a functional force of preservation rather than a character on a personal journey. The Phantom exists to perform a specific task and does not seek to transcend its designed purpose or lifespan.

The notable abilities of Boogiepop Phantom stem directly from its nature as an electromagnetic lifeform. As a Phantom, it is only semi-corporeal, capable of interacting with the physical world while also being semi-intangible and able to phase through objects. It can travel freely throughout the electromagnetic field, appearing and disappearing anywhere at will, though its lifespan is determined by the continued existence of the distorted magnetic field. In imitation of the original Boogiepop, the Phantom also wields ultra-sharp microfilament wire as a weapon. Because it does not have the limitations of a physical creature, it does not need to use the wire for movement as the original sometimes does, instead employing it purely as a cutting tool.
